The playing status of Georgia inside linebackers Roquan Smith and Natrez Patrick for the Bulldogs’ next game Oct. 29 against Florida isn’t clear after university police searched a dorm room they were in for marijuana Saturday night but did not charge either.
“Right now, really all I can comment on is we’re continuing to gather information,” coach Kirby Smart said Wednesday. “We’ll handle everything appropriately in due time. I don’t have a timeline on that right now.”
Patrick was suspended last year after a marijuana arrest and could be subject to a four-game suspension if Georgia determines he had a second violation of its drug policy. Smith could face a one-game suspension if he is found to have a first-time violation.
UGA police searched Patrick’s room in McWhorter Hall after a resident assistant reported the smell of burning marijuana. Smith was with him.
The two are the Bulldogs’ top tacklers.
Police found “a fake can of Arizona strawberry iced tea" with a hidden compartment, but no marijuana was found in the can. Patrick admitted to keeping marijuana in it when he actually had possession of it, but said he did not have any on Saturday night.
Police found other items identified as drug paraphernalia, according to a police incident report. The players said they had smoked cigars.
