The last time Georgia had a Saturday off from games Kirby Smart went to South Georgia to check out two of the state’s top prospects in person.
He watched Georgia quarterback commitment Jake Fromm’s Houston County team fall to defensive tackle target Aubrey Solomon’s Lee County squad.
That came two weekends ago when the Bulldogs game at South Carolina was pushed back a day due to Hurricane Matthew. This weekend, the Bulldogs long planned open date in the schedule will allow coaches to scatter throughout the Southeast.
“We’ve covered Georgia pretty well already, we’ve been sending guys out each week periodically,” said Smart, the Bulldogs head coach. “Obviously, an open week allows you to go a little further away from home. We’ll be in four or five different states Friday. You don’t obviously have to return as fast on Saturday for a game. We’ll have guys all over the southeast.”
Smart mentioned coaches going to Texas, Florida and Virginia on a weekend when all of the assistant coaches will be on the road.
Some coaches were already out recruiting on Monday this week and Smart said on his radio show Thursday night that he may hit the recruiting trail himself Friday night.
The Bulldogs currently have 15 commitments in the No. 3 recruiting class for 2017 as rated by 247Sports composite.
“Kids have been really positive on the phone,” Smart said earlier. “They understand there’s a lot of opportunities to come in and play and that’s what we’re selling, we’re selling this program is headed in the right direction.”
