Lost amidst the craziness of this week is North Carolina where once popular McCrory appears to be loooking at defeat

McCrory

The North Carolina gubernatorial race between Gov. Pat McCrory and Attorney General Roy Cooper is still too close to call, with less than five thousand votes separating them.

Cooper is in the lead and has declared victory but McCrory is not admitting defeat, asking that all provisional ballots be counted before it is called.

McCrory has seen his approval rating plummet amid the loss of millions of dollars in lost revenue and thousands of jobs due to boycotting of the anti-LGBTQ law House Bill 2 (HB2) he signed into law. HB2 invalidated nondiscrimination ordinances across the state, requires trans people to use bathrooms and locker rooms according to the gender on their birth certificates in government owned buildings, and also capped the state’s minimum wage.

and it is official

McCrory lost

North Carolina Governor Pat McCrory on Monday conceded the state's contested gubernatorial race to Democrat Roy Cooper, almost four weeks after the Nov. 8 election that many viewed as a referendum on a law limiting transgender bathroom rights.

The Republican incumbent had trailed his challenger since election night, when Cooper declared victory with a margin of fewer than 5,000 votes. McCrory refused to bow out, vowing to seek a recount and challenging the validity of votes his campaign said may have included ones cast by felons or dead people.

As of Monday, the state's unofficial election results showed Cooper's lead had grown to 10,263 votes as counties continued to tally ballots. McCrory was entitled to a recount only if he trailed by 10,000 votes or less.

In a video message issued by the governor's office, McCrory said Cooper had won "the closest North Carolina governor's race in modern history."

"Despite continued questions that should be answered regarding the voting process, I personally believe that the majority of our citizens have spoken," said McCrory, who sat on a couch with a Christmas tree in the background in the video.

I think this proves the point that most Americans do not think bathroom issues are really important and better left unspoken. I'm talking both parties. The whole thing is pedantic.

McCrory's policies hit the state in its pocketbook. He paid the price.
You have to hand it to the NBA taking a stand against North Carolina's alleged human rights violations while still playing games in Mexico and China.

But here's a catch I'd remind everyone - NONE OF US know if the lost because of the 'bathroom thing.' None of us know that.

Remember - Trump couldn't win, either. The conventional wisdom isn't always right. If it was, Hillary would be transitioning right now. Might it have played a role? Maybe. But I think the idea that ANY election turns on ONE ISSUE is one of the most naive traits we tend to exhibit as humans, too.

Interestingly, North Carolinians were so outraged by the bathroom thing that they returned the Republicans to veto-proof majorities in the state house and senate.

So is the argument that the people in North Carolina were all excited to hop into the bathroom with transgender people? I doubt that. But I doubt you're saying that as well.

What may have happened - and note that I don't live there, but I have two family members that live there, one a dyed in the blue blood socialist liberal with a gay son (my cousin) and the other a basic conservative but pro-gay marriage. They both had opposite votes and views in the governor's race. What might have happened was one of those situations where the law was reaffirmation (subtly or however) that 'we don't like this guy and want him gone.'

But NC is a strange bird politically anyway. This is a state that once had new liberal Terry Sanford and hard right conservative Jesse Helms as senators at the exact same time. They replaced liberal Sanford with moderate conservative Faircloth and then replaced Faircloth with hard left liberal John Edwards, who then opted to not run for re-election because he was going to lose.....and replaced Elizabeth Dole (moderate right) with Kay Hagan (moderate left).

I sometimes think it's a really whacked up state to counter-program like that but oh well.

Pence pulled an Edwards and may wind up President instead. Jon is right - 2016 is flat out weird in more than one or two ways.
