Living and working in Alabama means that you generally get to deal with Trumpers every day. My initial coping strategy was to not hide my anger and disgust. I'm now starting to think the better coping method is to not reveal the anger and revulsion that is building up over this avalanche of outrage we are subjected to. As long as liberals and just decent people are appalled at what we see out of Trump, the more Trumpers gloat and feed off of our discomfort. I'm trying not to give them that satisfaction.
Frankly, I think some of the formerly decent Trump supporters are surprised they can still be treated civilly by "those people."

It's hard to single out any particular outrage, each one goes beyond the last one. I saw speculation that said Trump is saving a public shouting of the n word as a grand finale before the election to stimulate his fans. At this point, it would not surprise me.

that's the point. they are trying to wear out everyone and normalize this vile behavior and it is working on a lot of folks. it is like a toddler throwing a tantrum to get what they want.

i think (or at least i hope) a lot of our current racist adjacent apologists are going to be surprised at what they have let themselves become when it reaches a tipping point, because things are going to start getting really nasty.

I used to think there were some limits. There aren't. If he asked his followers to shout "Sieg Heil!" there's no doubt in my mind they would do it...

I don't think they are surprised, nor will they be at some point in the future. I think this is the natural result of what they consider oppression from society during the Obama years. The man currently in the most powerful office in the world is openly saying the things that they wanted the freedom to say during the Obama years, but society no longer tolerated without social repercussions. This is why "he tells it like it is" is a dog whistle for the right much like "states rights."

Former Republican Party strategist Lee Atwater in 1981 said:
You start out in 1954 by saying, "N-word, N-word, N-word." By 1968, you can't say "n-word" – that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states' rights and all that stuff. You're getting so abstract now, you're talking about cutting taxes. And all these things you're talking about are totally economic things and a byproduct of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites. And subconsciously maybe that is part of it. I'm not saying that. But I'm saying that if it is getting that abstract, and that coded, that we are doing away with the racial problem one way or the other. You follow me – because obviously sitting around saying, "We want to cut this," is much more abstract than even the busing thing, and a hell of a lot more abstract than "N-word, n-word."

When the left ceded patriotism and religion to the right, the right was able to take those concepts and craft them into the versions that left very little room for anyone that wasn't "all in". Patriotism and religion have been moving to a god, guns, and country platform which in their eyes are very binary in nature. You are either for god, guns and "the American way" or you are a socialist, hippie liberal.

Just how much more nasty can it get? I don't think you are going to find images of water hoses being used on protesters to remind people of the strife in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. There are no unifying issues of the time like the Vietnam war provided to generate social unrest. People are either working 2 or 3 jobs which leaves them no time to protest/mobilize, or they are working a job that makes them realize "this isn't that bad for me". Vietnam touched everyone. Almost every young person in America either had an immediate family member already in the meat grinder, in danger of going, or a cousin who was in the same situation. That one event touched everyone not able to get a bone-spur deferment. Today the left constituency is fractured with too many factions to build a coalition and I think many just don't care about immigration/racism as much as the right and MSM makes them out to be. That or the people who do care, have been scared into staying home because of the constant threat of ICE raids.

Take this particular thread as a microcosm. Early on when DJT first got in, there was a ton of participation by trump supporters. But eventually the constant stream of facts, counterpoints and logic has caused this thread to have roughly the same 7 or 8 people posting the abhorrent things he does, with the standard snark and head shaking responses that make us all feel better about ourselves. But do you really think that those early posters have left? They are still around, posting on other threads, but there are far fewer drive-by DJT support threads because this echo chamber isn't the echo chamber they want. The other echo chambers available (facebook, twitter, whatever) have much more instant gratification and satisfaction from realizing that they are right, and it's this thread that has a whole bunch of people who aren't right in the head.

i do hold out some hope that it will go the way of gay marriage. there was a 24-7 puke funnel of "christians" spewing the most vile and vicious stuff you can imagine for years and years (this was a wingnut rallying point in the early-mid 2000s) and now we hear very little about it.

we have already seen multiple murders and attempted murders by his supporters and the dog-whistling has stopped with nasty stuff now being said openly and proudly, basically daring anyone to call it out. i hope it doesn't take too much more for enough people to make the swing back towards basic decency, but it's not looking like that is the case any time soon though.

How can he think this came out of left field ? Trump has been pretty openly racist all along.

If I were a younger man, I might be researching moving to another country as a backup plan for 2020 forward.

I agree. However, the comment telling the four Congresswomen to go back where they came from is the most out in the open comment Trump has made.

I think there here are still a lot of Trump supporters who would not support him if they realized he is a racist. That’s why we hear all the hypothetical questions asking if Trump came out and just openly admitted to being a racist, would they still support him. It’s amazing what the man gets away with.

As as bad as the racism is, there is plenty of film and tape of Trump’s sexual misconduct not to mention the 19 women who have publicly accused him. Who knows how many women have not said anything?

Add to that the obvious obstruction of justice, ties to the Russian mafia, admitting to taking information from the Russians to help him get elected, failing to inform the FBI about the Russian meddling, paying zero taxes, thousands of documented lies, and ties to pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

How is it possible to not at some point realize the man is evil and bad for our country?

Yea, I have very little, if any, sympathy for any of his supporters who are surprised by his racism at this point.

I’m too old also, but my eleven year old is not. I fully intend to have this conversation with her when she is in high school.

The topic has come up, even with us oldsters. I have one daughter in France and one in San Francisco, which may as well be a foreign country...
