U.S. and other Western nations have carried out exercises on NATO's eastern flank in past years, but the new deployment — which includes some 3,500 U.S. troops — marks the first-ever continuous deployment to the region by a NATO ally.

It is part of a larger commitment by President Barack Obama to protect a region that grew deeply nervous when Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014 and then began backing separatist rebels in Ukraine's east.

At the last NATO summit, the heads of state agreed to deploy NATO troops, multinational battalions of a little under 1,000 troops on a rotational basis to the Baltic countries that border Russia, as a reassurance measure. The Brits got Estonia, the Canadians are going to Latvia, and the Germans are going (back) to Lithuania.

The British will be housed on a base the US spent $11.2 million refurbishing. This is the crap I hope Trump will put an end to. The US builds a dadgum base and others get the benefit from it. I don't know, how about spending that US money on bases US troops will occupy? Why is that the US ends up being the chump whenever the current administration decides something?
