They think it might be the metal core of a planet that had its upper layers blasted away, leaving only the metal core.
Still, $10 quintillion is a hunk of change.
If Obama was in charge, NASA would explicitly declare that the US is an interplanetary imperialist power and give all the proceeds to the UN or some such as an interplanetary apology.

The article I found from a quick search said it's about 3x the distance of the earth from the sun.
