Re: BOL Projects 2017-2018 Basketball Lineup

Yes, Armond played Point, but that wasn't their natural position. We didn't have any true PG on the court. So I consider Davis and Ingram off ball guy. Dazon too. It will allow them to play little better with Sexton as PG.

I would expect the team to use several players to be the point throughout the game, similar to GSW in NBA. They allow Green, Thompson, Curry, West, Durant, McCaw to be the point on some of the offense.

The reason I said Herb Jones/Alex Reese/Gain Smith might see redshirt season, because I believe Johnson likes to go 7 or 8 man deep throughout the game. Out of three, I think Reese has the best chance to see playing time at the minimum.

I realize I listed Reese twice, but I guess I was torn on whether he might see playing time or not.
I think that rotation number has been due to a lack of quality depth. I think with our improved quality depth we will see that number go to 9 or 10 IMO.

doubtful to go 9-10 deep with meaningful minutes. not enough minutes to go that deep. probably will to start the season though in search of the right lineup.

You are somewhat right. I just saw where CAJ was interviewed today at the SEC meetings and he said he would like a 8-9 man rotation. He said he won't have a 10-11 rotation. He also said he wants to decide on a solid rotation in the early part of the season and stick with it.

Few things to remember:
“Absolutely. I think ball handling and decision making is critical. While everybody may want to talk about big guys, you’ve got to have great guard play. And you have to have speed and decision making and guys that can shoot it and pass it and shoot it, guys that can problem solve. I wish I could tell you that I have a perfect offensive system. Nobody does. You look at the Warriors, Cleveland, they have a lot of problem solvers. We think with the guys that we have coming back, with the guys that we have coming in, we have more depth at the guard position. Not just specific to the two guys Cal was talking about. We think we have the depth across the board at that area but those two guys coming in strengthens our position.”
Would you be surprised if two or three freshmen started this season?
“No, it wouldn’t shock me at all. But we haven’t had our first workout yet, we haven’t had our first real practice, which won’t happen until July. We’ll get those 10 practices going into our Canadian trip. I just think over time, we’re going to put the best five on the floor. We’re not going to mess around this year with not having a rotation earlier in the season. We’re not going to wait. We’ve got to have that eight-, nine-man rotation early. I’m not playing 11 or 12 guys. But at the same time, those guys know those practices are going to be as competitive as it’s ever been since I came to Alabama. Guys are going to have a lot of time to prove that they are in the rotation, because we have to have a rotation earlier this season.”

I think there has to be one more player with size who can be physical inside other than Hall and Giddens. I still don't see Key filling this role part-time so I'm thinking Reese or Smith for this. It will be interesting to see how Petty and Jones perform in practice to see if either lands ahead of Johnson and Davis as guards.

I don't know if CAJ will actively attempt to red-shirt players even if they aren't part of the regular rotation or if he will want them to get a little time on the court during the season. The thought of possibly red-shirting players with the talent level of the incoming freshmen is a whole new experience for Bama basketball (at least recently).

Catch-22 on Sexton. I want him to be good enough to be one-and-done but don't want him leaving after only one season. Don't know if he will be physically ready for the NBA at that point.

The lineup of Sexton, Ingram, Petty and Key along with a 5 seems similar to some of the lineups we have seen this season on occasion except maybe for the youth part of it.
And this is the reason I don't watch basketball anymore.

Was talking to my brother yesterday about the rotation. Really curious as to how it all shakes out. The Canada trip is going to go a long way in determining things.

I count seven guys that seem like givens to get significant playing time:

Braxton
Dazon
Riley
Armond
Donta
Giddens
AJ

It's pretty much a given that Sexton and Petty play, too. That's nine guys.

Do we burn redshirts for the other freshmen in the early part of the season knowing they might not be part of the rotation when we get to SEC play?

I believe you are correct with your assumption of those 9 guys being the heavy rotation, but I think either Herb Jones or Alex Reese give a few minutes of rest for Giddens or Donta, especially if they get in foul trouble

I'm gonna assume that we'll see players playing multiple positions at G/F. Riley Norris can play Guard and Forward, John Petty too. I think we'll see nice mixture of players in the line up: 3 guard, 2 Forwards, 4 guards, 1 Forward/Center, etc. We can go big, we can go small. We can play fast. We can play slow. I agree that we'll figure out the rotation early on before the regular season starts. Avery said that he would like to see rotation set early as possible.

Out of all Freshmen, I think sexton, Petty and Reese will play. Smith needs to develop his body, Jones is a guard and it'll be hard for him to find a minutes this year.

I do wonder who will be the odd man out at the guard position this year? I'm thinking it's Avery Johnson Jr. Avery is going to try short the rotation to 7 or8 players.

It's hard for me to imagine that we burn Freshmen's redshirts later in the year unless we suffer two or 3 injuries.

I forgot about herb Jones. I can see him playing too. I would rather the F/C freshmen to get some minutes here and there to get used to the feel of the game...

I say we do like Roy Williams and just unload the whole bench and see how it plays out. We need quality depth pretty bad.
That's why the Canada trip in August is going to be so critical. Will give Avery about 4 or 5 games to evaluate the new guys and figure out the best rotations.

He may have a rotation, but every coach and team needs role players who fill a specific need. Sometimes the kid is a 3 point specialist, sometimes a defensive stopper, sometimes a rebounder, and even sometimes simply to foul. I think we have the ability to carve out specific roles for every guy this year.

My rotation is:
1) Sexton or AJ Jr.
2) Ingram, Petty, and Armond
3) Norris, Armond, and Petty
4) Key, Norris, and Reese
5) Giddens or Hall at center

Forgot something I was told a few months ago - Herb Jones will play. He was on Trendon Watford's AAU team, and Watford's parents are watching how Herb is used by Bama.

If that is the case, we are at 11 or 12 man rotation which I don't think is the plan. Game situations, fouls, and matchups always dictate who will play where and how much so it would not surprise me to see us go deeper than most fans thought we would. For example, I suspect Giddens will play more against say Austin Wiley than the more slender frame of Hall.

We definitely have and need more scoring so whoever struggles with shooting the ball may see fewer minutes. This is where I see Key,Petty and Jones potentially being the boost to put us over the top in the SEC. I don't think this will be a year where UK wins the league by default either. I think Florida, USC, Arky, and Bama will all put pressure on the Cats this year.

It's not the gameplan. CAJ was quoted he would like to go 9-10 but we will not see 11+ in the rotation.

With all the players that's practicing well this offseason according to the coach, there will be 2-3 that will be out of luck this fall.

I just don't know how It'll work out at the guard positions:

We have the following guards:
Riley Norris, Avery Johnson Jr, Dazon Ingram, Armond Davis, Braxton key, Collin Sexton, John Petty, and you have Herb Jones.

Only way I can see Herb getting playing time if he slides at the 3 position time to time.. Herb will play, but he won't be part of rotation... but I definitely can see Herb as starter next year but we gotta develop him. If the game is up by 10 with 4 minutes left, then I can see herb stepping in and get a feel for the game.
