Haven't been playing close attention to the game but we are ahead 2-0 going to the 5th.

Wood with a RBI single in the 2nd. Short with a solo shot in the 4th.

Here's the real reason behind the post, we turned a triple play in the 4th! Imagine that...

Medders got the start and pitched 4. Rukes then pitched 3.1 before giving way to Vainer with one out in the 8th and a runner on 2B.

We scratch out another run in the 9th to lead 4-0.

UAB scores a run when our LF dropped a fly ball but Vainer gets the final out for his 3rd save.

Final: Bama wins 4-1

On to S. Carolina for the weekend.

I made the drive to B'ham for the game. What I saw was encouraging. The players seemed relaxed and to be having fun. There were lots of smiles and the players seemed to be enjoying themselves, even those who had appeared sullen for the past couple of weeks. They were encouraging each other and sharing information following at bats against new pitchers. The coaches even seemed a little more relaxed.

The triple play was crucial. The stars lined up perfectly for it to happen. The runners were moving on the pitch and Avant was moving toward second to cover the bag. The batter hit a line drive that would have been into centerfield if Avant hadn't been moving. He caught it about four inches above the ground, stepped on second and tossed to first. Beautiful play.
