Work to repair a collapsed portion of Interstate 85 is in the home stretch.

Crews began striping lanes of the bridge Tuesday morning. NewsChopper 2 was over the scene on Channel 2 Action News at Noon.

Construction crews with contractor C.W. Matthews have been working around the clock for more than a month to repair the road after a fire caused part of the interstate to collapse.

“It’s definitely pressure on the whole team from the standpoint that we know how important this project is for the whole community, for the whole area, so from that regard, it has been,” C.W. Matthews President Dan Garcia told Channel 2's Aaron Diamant.

Just 41 days after the collapse, the Georgia Department of Transportation said the work is 90 percent finished.

Construction crews get bonuses for finishing early (at least for government work on buildings they do). The weather has been kind as well.
When malfunction junction in Birmingham was heavily damaged after a wreck/fire (2002), the contractor worked around the clock and finished early (53 days for the whole project; had a 90 day timeline). He was paid over $1 million in bonuses. They can get it done quickly when motivated by $omething.

Commissioner Russell McMurry announced contractor C.W. Matthews will be awarded an extra $1.5 million if they complete the project by May 25 or $2 million for completing it by May 21, the AJC reported. If the contractor beats May 21, they’ll get $200,000 for each day before that deadline up to a total of $3.1 million.

Can they apply that same bonus to the multitude of other projects that have been dragging on for years?
They can, but it won't necessarily help. Here's how you getter dun:

Sen. Perdue visited to offer his support for the workers and GDOT. He said he has worked with the federal government to ensure no red tape will hold construction back.

“We’ve been assured that all federal hindrances or anything that could cause any kind of slowdown will be dealt with,” Perdue said.
In other words, things can happen fast when you throw the federal regulations out the window.
