Washington — Chelsea Manning was “released safely” on Wednesday from the Fort Leavenworth military prison in Kansas, her supporters announced. The military also said that she was no longer in its custody, but provided no further details.
Ms. Manning had served seven years of an unprecedented 35-year sentence for leaking government files to WikiLeaks. Former President Barack Obama commuted most of the remainder of her sentence during his final days in office.
Ms. Manning was known as Pvt. Bradley Manning in 2010 when she was arrested and accused of sending archives of military and diplomatic documents to WikiLeaks. After her trial in 2013, she announced that she was a transgender woman and changed her name to Chelsea.
