The Commodores plated eight in the first to put the game out of reach

5/19/2017

NASHVILLE, TN –
Alabama baseball fell behind early and could not recover, eventually falling by a score of 13-1 to Vanderbilt on Friday night at Hawkins Field. The win clinched the series victory for the Commodores, while the Crimson Tide moves to 19-34 overall, 5-24 in Southeastern Conference action.

Kyle Wright (4-5) was dominant in his start, working 7.1 innings and limiting the Tide to just one run. The junior righty gave up five hits and issued one walk while punching out 11 Alabama hitters for his fourth win of the season. Alabama starter Jake Walters (5-5) suffered the loss, working 4.0 innings in the outing.

Vanderbilt put together a big first inning for the second night in a row, plating eight runs on eight hits and two errors to take an 8-0 lead after an inning of play. A pair of Alabama errors in that first proved costly, as only two of the eight runs in the inning were earned. Alabama scored one run in the top of the second to make it an 8-1 game. Hunter Alexander singled with one down to give the Tide a baserunner and advanced to second on an infield groundout. With two outs, Alex Webb delivered an RBI-double to left-center to put the Tide on the board.

The Commodores added one in the bottom of the third and two in the fifth to take an 11-1 lead after the five. A two-run homer by Vanderbilt in the bottom of the seventh made it a 13-1 contest and close out the day's scoring.

Offensively, Alabama was paced by Chandler Avant and Chandler Taylor, who each finished with a pair of hits. Taylor went 2-for-3 on the night with a walk and a double, while Avant added a 2-for-4 line. Webb contributed the team's lone RBI as part of his 1-for-3 evening at the plate.

Alabama will finish its 2017 campaign on Saturday afternoon. The Crimson Tide and Commodores are set to meet for game three of the series at 1 p.m. CT at Hawkins Field. Alabama will look to junior right-hander Garrett Suchey in the start, while Vanderbilt counters with freshman righty Drake Fellows. Fans can catch the final game of the regular season on SEC Network+.
