Seems like the extremes from both sides are controlling the conversation anymore...
Those that speak the loudest and all that.

Nope, there are thousands more with waaaaaaaaaaaaay more incredible stories. Guys that came on rafts from Cuba that lost family on that boat (they drowned) then joined the service to fight for a country that wasn't yet their own, then became citizens.

Guys that came over a fence and river from Mexico at age 5 with family and then joined the army, deployed several times for defense of a country before being granted citizenship.

That's why when I see these staunch left vs right views, it's frustrating.

Tell me the hard right pundit who could find fault in someone who came here illegally but in some cases died fighting for this country.

Tell me the far left ideologue who believes socialism is the bees knees, but hasn't met that kid from Cuba whose family worked for the state owned firms and lived so impoverished that they'd risk it all just to touch dry land stateside.

I'm not saying each story is great. Some who come over may just become plain citizens, others the criminals some worry about. Either way, this 100% solution doesn't exist.

Your humility is to be commended, but a story has to first be told in order to be compelling. If it makes you feel better, you might provide hope for others, understanding for some, and could even donate a % of proceeds to a good cause. Just food for thought.

Anyway, you are on point with the fringes of political conversation dominating the conversation.

Purism is usually not the place to be but the loud shouters on all sides demand it. It really is frustrating because there are several things I truly believe in that would nix me being in the American liberal tent yet there are people on here who think I'm Comrade RGW.

I'm a technical writer. Just started a new job in Atlanta at the beginning of the month.
Cool. While my work has changed over the years as I've taken on different roles, I've been with the same company in Birmingham for 25 years. I love what I've done over the years and what I'm currently doing. I also work with a lot of great people.

Yah, it's kind of sad - most of my conservative friends think I'm a liberal, most of my liberal friends think I'm conservative.

I'm just sitting mostly in the middle wondering why everyone seems so extreme...

Thank you for your service to our country as well as being one hell of a citizen !!! My hat is off to you sir.

I don't believe there's a 100% answer to this. Especially when it's always either "the answer must be 100% left or 100% right" to be accepted, and even then by only 50% of the country.

I grew up living in the following order;
tobacco barn, car, homeless, friends laundry room, garage, homeless with a little sister and no adults, each family member until ending up with my grandma where I remained from age 11 on.

We were on food stamps and Medicaid, while my grandmother and grandfather both worked factory jobs. Without those two programs we couldn't have lived with them. I've worked since age 7 pulling tobacco, in my teens shingling roofs, and at age 16 worked at the local fast food place and with regular pay to help supplant, we got off food stamps.

The day after high school I left for the military and a better life and never looked back. Now a year from having served 20, it's humbling to remember those roots, but I feel like I have a better grasp than most regarding both sides of the coin.

My mother was an idiot who wanted kids, financial planning be damned. Without those social programs, 2 people that worked full time jobs still wouldn't have been able to care for us.

Ideally, people don't have kids if they can't afford it. The housing boom taught the same lesson didn't it, just with homes. But that's not reality, and it's a place I don't want to be if we're taking eugenics and breeding selection/rights.

I wish I knew your life story so I could point out every bit of the government dole you're on.

But of course, you're probably such a red-blooded american that you don't even drive on roads to avoid appearing like a government dole parasite.
LOL! You have no clue...you better stick to sports because you don't seem well suited to political discussions.

The state and Federal governments already determine disability, don't they?
And citing eugenics is a bit of an overstatement, isn't it? There is quite a difference between forced sterilization and sterilization as a condition of continuing to receive money from the public coffers, is it not?
I'm not so sure there is that much of a difference, honestly. Pure eugenics is based upon supposed genetic facts. A sterilization proposal for welfare merely shifts the precondition from genetics to one's ability to sustain themselves. And I think we can all agree that once government is granted power over a certain aspect of life, they rarely give up or reduce that power in the future. You are simply shifting the argument from one of denying a person reproductive ability based on their genetic contributions to society to denying a person their reproductive ability based on their economic contributions to society. I would not even entertain a "temporary" sterilization for two main reasons. Firstly, any forced sterilization, even upon condition, denies the basic humanity of people, and will ultimately result in the creation of a 2nd class of "other" citizens. You need only look at the blacklisted 2nd children of China for example. Secondly, I do not trust any government with the awesome power to decide who can have children and who can't, based on some arbitrary checklist, and to keep this power fair and limited for all eternity.

There are many things wrong with our social security "safety net" programs, and our welfare system certainly encourages the proliferation of unwed mothers with many children and irresponsible absentee fathers that causes untold abuses of the system and, among other things, a outwardly spiraling circle of perpetual government dependence. However, I think there are better ways to solve these problems than treating people like animals to be neutered for bad behavior.

:)
