According to a local paper, he was both mentally ill and a known white supremacist.Dang, the guy sounds like a nut job to me. That's just a totally senseless tragedy.
LinkChristian is a known right wing extremist and white supremacist. On April 29, Christian showed up to the right-wing "March for Free Speech" on 82nd Avenue in Montavilla with a baseball bat in an attempt to assault left-wing protesters. The bat was quickly confiscated by Portland police officers. He ranted how he was a nihilist. He'd soon yelled racial slurs ("f*** all you n*****s") and gave the Nazi salute throughout the day. He yelled "Hail Vinland" throughout the day.
A few Portland police officers on April 29 appeared to be familiar with Christian, but not threatened by him. They claimed he had a head injury and was mentally ill.
which brings up 2 things we are doing wrong as a country, not taking care of the mentally ill and not keeping an eye on right wing extremists who have killed far more people in this country than refugees in acts of terror.
Oh now you've done it.which brings up 2 things we are doing wrong as a country, not taking care of the mentally ill and not keeping an eye on right wing extremists who have killed far more people in this country than refugees in acts of terror.
poor sentence structure but I was also discussing the number of people murdered by the mentally ill which is again, far more than by refugees in terror incidentsOh now you've done it.
But for those keeping track: that's 3 Americans murdered by alt-right fanatics in the past week, and 0 murdered by refugees in the last 40 years. Cato link.
They're not unrelated; there's a large overlap between mental illness and fanaticism.poor sentence structure but I was also discussing the number of people murdered by the mentally ill which is again, far more than by refugees in terror incidents
this happened last week (murdered by someone mentally ill) to the lady who was in charge of the infant room at my daughter's schoolpoor sentence structure but I was also discussing the number of people murdered by the mentally ill which is again, far more than by refugees in terror incidents
Pretty sure you're being redundant there.he was both mentally ill and a known white supremacist.
Not to be pedantic, but the zero figure only counts refugees from the travel ban listed countries. Off the top of my head the Boston Marathon bombers came as refugees (as children), just from a different country.Oh now you've done it.
But for those keeping track: that's 3 Americans murdered by alt-right fanatics in the past week, and 0 murdered by refugees in the last 40 years. Cato link.
Not quite, evidently. Cato is probably using very strict definitions when they make that claim. Here's their exact wording:Not to be pedantic, but the zero figure only counts refugees from the travel ban listed countries. Off the top of my head the Boston Marathon bombers came as refugees (as children), just from a different country.
Again, there's some common sense middle ground between completely open borders and completely closed xenophobia, but all we usually hear are the extremes of both sides.
FIFYJeremy Joseph Christian was a Bernie Sanders, Jill Stein, and Donald Trump supporter. But was mostly mentally ill.
Two Muslim groups —CelebrateMercy and the Muslim Education Trust — created a LaunchGood online fundraising campaign on Saturday that cited the Prophet Muhammad as inspiration to response to hate with compassion.
“We wish to respond to hate with love, to evil with good, as our faith instructs us, and send a powerful message of compassion through action,” the website reads. “Our Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, said: ‘Have mercy to those on earth, and the One in Heaven (God) will have mercy upon you.’ The Prophet’s life exemplified that central commandment in the Quran: ‘Repel evil with that which is better’ (41:34).”
Organizers, who noted that people of all faiths were welcome to contribute, initially set out to raise $60,000, hoping to aid with funeral expenses for the victims’ families and help pay for Fletcher’s medical bills.
According to the campaign website, it took only five hours to shatter that goal. Money continued to pour in over the weekend, and the campaign has now raised more than $450,000 as of Tuesday morning.
