Whoa...

Bob Stoops, one of the three coaching giants of Oklahoma’s century-long football excellence, plans to tell his team Wednesday that he will retire after 18 seasons as the Sooner head coach.

An OU source said offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley will take over as head coach.

It is expected that Stoops will remain with the university in some capacity.

Interesting......

Take a year off -- make some TV Money and then end up the new Head Coach where?

I have to believe he's being forced out or is planning to take another gig. No way the "retirement" sticks.

Crazy news though.

Bruce Feldman tweeted a source said Stoops and OU's other OC have been grooming Lincoln Riley to take over for the past year. Maybe this has been in the works, but the timing is awful strange.

That would certainly explain his seemed lack of interest in the Bama OC job...

Seems very odd to have been in the works but not done during bowl prep to give Stoops the send off...

Dang. He is only 56. Guessing this is not a permanent retirement. Saban is 65.
Who knows, but I'm surprised more top coaches don't retire after 10 years or so. Think about making $5M+ per year for 10 years and it's basically like winning the lottery. I would guess Stoops total compensation over his 18 years in Oklahoma is close to $60M - if you take into account salary and all the other perks of being a head coach at a blue blood program. I mean, at that point why in the world would someone still want to coach? Plus, I bet he stays onboard at OU in some capacity for a good chunk of change..

I think you are right. Maybe not ND but certainly another coaching gig some where; although if I were to wager I think this is Brian Kelly's last year. Other possibilities after this year might be Florida, USCw, TAMU, Michigan and yes even Alabama or the NFL which seems more likely.

Forgot to mention I am ducking after this post.
