I saw the same article. Poor guy died on April 16, 1945, the war having only three weeks left. He almost made it. I was curious where this crash happened, as Germany held very little terrain at that point. Lindau is in southern Germany, on the Bodensee.

Not only that, but there probably wasn't a lot happening, in that sector, at that point in the war.
