Pavel Sheremet, a Russian journalist living in Kyiv, was killed one year ago by a car bomb. Pavel opposed Putin and had moved to Kyiv to get away from Putin, but was also given to criticizing Ukrainian officials as well. His car blew up on his way to work 20 July 2016.
Ukrainian president said that finding Pavel's killer(s) was "a matter of honor" for Ukrainian police. It was the Russians, right? Maybe not.
One year on, no arrests, no leads.
A group of Ukrainian journalists decided to look into the matter.
Killing Pavel is a documentary that they put together.
Police reported that CC tv showed a man and a woman placed a bomb on Pavel's car at 2:40 in the morning.
Investigative journalists, without the compulsive power of the police, found other CC videos showing a grey Skoda parking near the place where the bomb was placed. The driver got out of the car and walk past the bomb-placement team just before the bomb-placement team placed the bomb.
A German investigative journalist puts together the license number of the car tag. Eventually, journalists find and interview the driver, "Igor in Odesa." Sources inside the SBU confirm that "Igor in Odesa" is one of theirs.
It's possible that Igor had nothing to do with the bombing, but why was he there at 2:40 am? Why have the police not interviewed him? The Ukrainian government is either incompetent or complicit or both.
This episodes also shows what real investigative journalism looks like.
