Thanks for the link, Earle...I learned something about this species....cool.

Can you tell if the adult bear in the water is a male or female just by watching through the cam?

Generally, yes. However, a two-year old male is close to the size of an adult female. The big males have a bit more pronounced hump. You don't generally see a female fishing without cubs...

Pretty awesome. Will be looking in regularly.

Unfortunately, every time this park comes up, my thoughts are colored by the memory what an imbecile Timothy Treadwell was, as it was my first time hearing of the park.

Can we surmise this is a male because there are no cubs?

Or is the 'rule of thumb' more like.....when cubs are present...likely that's a female?

FYI: I just found a very informative 36 page PDF from the state of Alaska with information on identifying their bears:

This isn't a bad pamphlet. I had to chuckle over the statement that the only sure way to tell male and female brown bears apart is to wait for them to pee...

When they're mature, it's no problem at all. However, as I said, there's a period when the male is still growing that they are around the size of the female. Also, you have to know what population you're looking at. Inland, so-called "barren ground grizzlies" average at least 30% smaller than the coastal brownies, because of diet. They are really the same species. The inland bears have a little flatter profile, but they interbreed without difficulty...
