You'd think the rapture had started based on the turn this thread has made. but it all seriousness, humans have done a lot worse things than curse on tv throughout history.
Everyone has their own set of standards. Sometimes it has to do with how old they are. Sometimes how they were raised. Sometimes the environment they were raised in. Or a combination of all three.

Of course humans have done worse things than curse on TV. Rape and murder included. There are always "worse things". Doesn't make the cursing OK, does it? If so...why isn't it allowed here?

About the only thing that has changed regarding American society today compared to "the good ole days" is people are doing and saying in public what they used to do, think or say in private.

In the "good ole days", rather than people using "dirty language" in public, they'd simply wait until they got behind closed doors and do it. Does that make them any more moral? Nope, it just means they were putting up a facade to who they really were on the inside. You can apply that to marriages, public figures, and most other things we point to as a sign that we are less moral. "Man" has always been immoral in most categories we point to. It didn't just start today or because President "so and so" took office etc. It's just more acceptable to put on display than before. But that doesn't make it less moral. It just means some aren't putting up facades of who they really are anymore. It's kind of liberating in some way to know who people are up front.
I agree with most of what you wrote - people are still hypocrites.

It's just my opinion though that our value system has crumbled badly.

I don't see it ever returning either, but who knows....I'm just an old man yelling at a cloud....

But by historical standards our value system hasn't crumbled. My point about there being worse things is that society has continued to move on despite people doing bad stuff sometimes. So, sure talk about how certain values have changed and if it is against your values you can gripe about it, but that's hardly the "Demise of Mankind."

I'm not really trying to argue that cursing is moral or immoral just saying that the world isn't ending and our value system as a whole is no worse than it has been at other points in history. I mean women couldn't even vote 100 years ago. I would rate that as much worse than cursing on TV.

But, when they kept it in private I didn't get to hear it. So -- morality aside..... I prefer commercials didn't refer to the "finer points" of taking a "dump" OR condom commercials that leave little to the imagination OR hear a comedian on basic cable at 3pm in the afternoon talk about used tampons as fish bait..... I'd be fine if more of it went back behind closed doors.

I really think the most damaging thing today in the United States is the polarization of our people politically. I wish everyone could strain toward our similarities instead of our differences. I believe we could accomplish much more.

Oh I agree, I prefer it because most of the times my kids are around. It bothers me beyond belief when we're out somewhere and some guy is dropping eff bomb after eff bomb and my kids are sitting there having to listen to that. We don't talk that way at home but at the same time life isn't going to be "like home". I can't shelter my kids from all things.

But my point was morality hasn't declined among people. People were just as immoral "back in the good ole days" as they are now.

you can thank jerry fallwell, pat robertson, rush limbaugh, newt gingrich, etc for that. the polarization is by design and has been an increasingly fundamental part of conservatism since the late 70s.

Well -- we could also thank Jimmy Carter for his wonderful performance as a President......

We need polarization.....in everything. That's how voices get heard. When we all align -- we end up aligning behind "crazy".....

The problem with the press for so long is that it was all aligned.....no alternate messages were heard, until Rush broke that door down.

weaponized non-sense has turned out to be a pretty crappy alternate message.

I'm sure it's nonsense to you.....because it opposes your belief system.

What we would have in it's place is a fast shift VS a slow and steady resistance-free shift to socialism?

and you and many others have obviously bought into it hook, line, and sinker. good thing y'all have kept us from the resistance-free slide into "socialism"

Oh geez....you may not agree with Rush. You may think he's a self-gratifying blow hard. I actually think he is too. But - from an entertainment stand point - he's great. He also created a genre that previously was non-existent and he re-engergized AM Radio for 2 decades. He allowed folks who felt that they weren't represented to have a voice that they could rally behind.

But, it's just one side.... I'd much rather have Rush/Fox on one side -- battling the other 90% of the media.....to create even a slight sense of balance. Why would anyone object to having a voice for alternate views?

Actually to be fair the rocks you throw should be thrown in both directions right and left. If we could coexist to some degree politically we might have a more meandering course, if we try to be more open to each others views, but we could at least be pulling in the same general direction. By the way I didn't intend to hijack the discussion.

yes we could. the folks i mentioned in my post have explicitly pushed against co-existence and have dealt in sowing spite, resentment, and victimhood at "not being heard".

alternate views are great if they are useful. They aren't great just because they are alternative.
