Ha, my blood draws are usually uneventful. I was often "volunteered" in med school for students learning phlebotomy.

Although my veins are prominent, they roll and always have. I've been butchered a few times. The last stick I had, the phlebotomist said "Good, you brought your veins." I responded that they rolled. She said "I don't care. If I can see'em, I can stick'em"...

She did, too. The worst experience I ever had was before a surgical procedure. The nurse came in raving about my veins. She left three attempts later, with my left hand turning into a massive bruise. The supervisor stuck the other hand without incident. In those days, the only thing separating patients was a curtain. I heard her enter next door and begin raving about the next victim's veins. I felt like shouting "RUN!" The sequel came in the followup at the surgeon's office. I related the incident. The doc and his office nurse looked at each other and then he said "nurse Passwater?" I answered yes...

About the roofs, Chamberanger is a tiny little village and the highest inhabited in the area year-round. It has about 50 permanent residents. Only a handful still work. My SIL estimated that 98% of the village are retired and on pension. The average age is probably at least 75. You can look at the roofs and see who has money and who doesn't. The have-nots have roofs made of any old recycled galvanized metal. The stone house with the obviously new balcony is owned by the only other English-speakers in the village, Robert and Lucy. He's a Brit and she's Chinese, and they work in IT remotely. It's not a prosperous area, despite the natural beauty. Rachel and Dominik's restaurant is in an adjacent valley, in Pralognan la Vanoise, which is a ski area and prosperous. The whole area is in the Parc de Vanoise, the oldest national park in France...

This is the ship I served on from February 1971 to June 1972. This picture was taken in September of 1971 steaming through the Kiel Canal. We were on our way from Kiel, Germany to Hamburg. We went from Hamburg to Brest, France and then to Liverpool. The Blakely was commissioned in 1970, decommissioned in 1998 and scrapped in 2000.

The Blakely was 438 ft in length, displaced 4,181 tons (fully loaded), top nautical speed 32 knots, crew 18 officers and 257 enlisted. It was a Knox class destroyer escort, one of 21 in this class. It was equipped with a 5 inch 54 caliber front mounted cannon, ASROC (Anti Submarine Rockets) and Sparrow Missles located on the fantail.
