If Tennessee was smart, they'd go after someone who has won a conference title somewhere before. It might not work out but their trio of up-and-comers busted out big time.

I still think Les Miles would be a smart hire for them. Not a lot of available coaches out there that have proven track records...

I rode a bus in and out with police escort for the one and only game I have attended at UT so it seemed pretty nice to me.;)
You are right. I'd forgotten it, but we had escort all the way back to the bus parking lot. That got us out on I-75 way ahead of the pack. One weird thing happened on that trip. I stayed in the Holiday Inn in Cleveland. At the time, the room rental was $100 even. I checked out without incidence. On the following Tuesday, my credit card was declined for lunch. I didn't think much except I should check it out. Back at the office, my wife called and told me that the manager of the HI had called. The card company which handled the chain's credit card charges dropped the decimal on me and 35K other customers, so my $100 room became $10,000 and that maxed out the card. (This was back in the day when credit cards didn't have the high limits that cards usually have now.) I also heard directly from HI and they gave me two free nights in a HI. We used them a couple of years later in Moab, UT...

I still don't quite get their fascination with Jon Gruden. The NFL is a radically different game than college, and especially the SEC.

It occurs to me that if they were to get him and commence to dancing in the streets, would they just be calling for his head three years later?

From Wikipedia:

College coaching

After graduating from the University of Dayton, Gruden was hired as a graduate assistant coach at the University of Tennessee during the 1985–1986 season.[9] After his time with the Volunteers, he spent two years after that as the quarterbacks coach at Southeast Missouri State. Gruden then moved to the University of the Pacific in 1989 as offensive assistant as the tight ends coach. Walt Harris was the offensive coordinator at Tennessee, where Gruden was one of his graduate assistant coaches, and later hired him at Pacific. In 1990, Gruden was a special assistant with the San Francisco 49ers under quarterbacks coach Mike Holmgren.[10][11] In March 1991, Gruden became the wide receivers coach for the University of Pittsburgh under Paul Hackett.[12]

Professional coaching

In January 1992, at the age of 28, Gruden was hired by Mike Holmgren, his former boss at the San Francisco 49ers, to be the special offensive assistant/wide receivers coach with the Green Bay Packers.[11] After three seasons in Green Bay, Gruden became the offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles under former Packers assistant coach Ray Rhodes. Gruden then was chosen by the owner and general manager of the Oakland Raiders, Al Davis, to be the Raiders' new head coach for the 1998 season.

So in short, he hasn't spent ONE DAY as a head coach at ANY college.

Personally, I hope he DOES go and coach the Vols.

He's been a leading topic on their boards since Fulmer was pushed out. They started talking him up after both Dooley's and Jones' first years...

This guy is so over rated. How long since he actually coached, never ran a college program at any level. Why does his name come up for every job open? he is smart enough to never take any of them so he must know he could never live up to the hype. He has a great paying easy job compared to being a HC.

Lane burned the bridge between him and Knoxville.

Can you imagine UT having to buyout Lane to fire him when things don't work out. Somebody would kill him. He is despised where I live (in Tennessee).

Yep. They hate his guts around here and regardless of how desperate they get, I would never see them seriously taking him back.

He did two things to rile them: he ran off suddenly, and then he coached for us as a coordinator while beating them. They'll never forgive him for either.

I think we have found something nice to say about Tennessee. Atleast they won't hire CLK a second time.

FWIW, I voted "yes" to the take Lane Kiffen back poll on Volnation. :p

Tennessee is an incredible place to live. I'd rather be in Montana, after that, I'd pick Tennessee. There are really great people here with old fashioned values. Nashville is the greatest city in the south, but Memphis is close to the worst. My family has been in Tennessee for about 200 years.

I hate the Vols. To say something nice about the football team, well, thanks for the mediocrity.
