Yeah, but the NCAA didn't accept that until today. You can self-impose anything.
Though it would have been funnier, it still doesn't work the way you are saying either. There's no reason to believe the NCAA would have made the bowl ban extend through 2019 if OM had only 5 wins.

Wow, if it's 13 scholarships total, this is an absolute joke.

We will never know. Depends on what they wanted.

This is why I think they went too light. This has become a part of how Ole Miss runs their program and has been a consistent pattern that is acknowledged in the article. It seems to me they aren't re-peat offenders but THREE-peat offenders.

From the article:
"This is now the third case over three decades that has involved the boosters and football program," the panel stated in its decision. "Even the head coach acknowledged that upon coming to Mississippi, he was surprised by the 'craziness' of boosters trying to insert themselves into his program. At the hearing, Mississippi's chancellor acknowledged his institution's problem with boosters, characterizing one instance as 'disturbingly questionable.'"

JMO, but this is a slap on the wrist given their infractions.

6 scholly reductions this year, 4 next year. 2018 bowl ban. Those are the only real penalties in this document.
These are not really harsh penalties considering the crime. Still much harsher than the zero penalties North Carolina got for 30 years of academic fraud.

"NCAA Hammers Ole Miss"

Only 1 extra bow ban and a paltry 13 schollys overall.
We could re-name to something like "NCAA faced with massive systemic violations that are by far the worst since that time they, you know, killed a program; sort of cares, but not really - please remember to donate to your favorite recruiting target today!" Not sure of character limits though...

Truthfully, I'm surprised the NCAA came down this hard. Their entire focus is on how much money can they make off of "student-athletes", and their infractions people keep that well in mind when imposing sanctions now. They are useless, and provide no function whatsoever that is good for college athletics.

You'll never be able to quantify the number of recruits who won't come now because of the labels of probation. The 19 they sign won't be mostly 4 star recruits.

Plus, those that transfer leave a leadership/culture vacuum.

Regarding the bowl ban, they won't be able to share in the conference pool of bowl money for this year and next. that's a lot of dough.

They are just going to continue being Ole Miss - a team that is pretty good once every 5-10 years and only slightly better than Vandy/Kentucky the rest of the time.

Dan Wolken had a good question earlier - who had Hugh Freeze in the "Who gets the weakest punishment" office pool?

He can have a brand new assistant job tomorrow without any problems.

Re: NCAA hammers Ole Miss

AJ Brown, come on down to Tuscaloosa..
Lets go get:

Ken Webster CB
Breeland Speaks DE
Javien Hamilton CB
Zedrick Woods S

We need players in the secondary and adding speaks to the DL would help the pass rush AND make the D-Line next year look a lot better. (Ray, Williams, Davis, Buggs, Speaks would give us 5 to rotate, add in one more juco/grad transfer and hope either a freshman or Mathis can be ready and we have 7 that can rotate the 3 spots.)

We can make the numbers work, I'm sure someone or four have a lingering back issue or turf toe and need to go on medical...
