Agree. I expect Dunbar to go. With the hiring of Banks, I expect Pannunzio could be moved off the field as well. Banks coached TE at aTm the past 3 years so he could step in with them as well. If that were to happen, I’d look for Saban to try and keep Weinke as QB coach for the 10th assistant.

From his aTm bio:
"As a player, Banks was a two-time all-conference punter for Washington State, posting a 42.8 average as a junior and 43.4 as a senior. As a senior, he led the Pac 10 and was No. 15 nationally while helping the Cougars go 10-2 and earn an invitation to the Rose Bowl. Banks was selected to participate in the Senior Bowl. Banks earned his bachelor’s degree in communications from Washington State in 1999."

This is the makings of a HUGE hire. He was the primary recruiter on Christian Kirk and a number of other huge recruits. As well Texas A&M lead the SEC in blocked kicks under him in 2016.

Kevin Hagan mentioned in his podcast that Saban knew he needed to rejuvenate his staff with elite recruiters, and he nailed it. The rich are once again getting richer.

I also like the fact that he will have massive Texas recruiting connections among the high school coaches in Texas. You can bet Tennessee will improve in recruiting, I expect Florida to be better under Mullen, and UGA is recruiting at a high level too. It will be interesting to see how ole slimy Kirby does when he doesn't have our recruiting board, and CNS doesn't retire in 2018. This hire could give us the opportunity to pull some studs out of Texas. I think LSU is on the way down as well, and they pull quite a few from Texas. The door could be open to have a bigger impact recruiting in the Lone Star state.
He's a good coach, and recruiter. He is pretty well known by High School Coaches in Texas.
Good Hire.

New kicker and punter. Perfect time to bring in a guy like this. I don't know anything about him, but I know that Saban does.

it is great timing.... most had hoped that CNS would hire a full-time ST coach with this extra assistant

Never felt like the specialists got enough attention in the typical coordinator level duties in 9-member staff arrangements. Like I said earlier, you could tell that TAMU benefited from having a dedicated special teams coordinator (though technically he did TEs too but they hardly use them). He's been a punt/kick specialist for most of his career. This was a big hire. I expect our specialists to improve greatly. I expect for us to get more returns and blocks now too.

Under Sumlin, special teams was just about the only area where I felt the Aggies consistently won or stalemated against us. This was my dream type of hire with the extra staff member...we've been needing this specialization for years. The fact he's done well in recruiting is awesome too.

I wonder how many "starters" aTm used on punt teams, kickoff teams, etc. We know CNS allows some real studs to play STs.

That could work both ways right? - either Banks getting better-good results without our starters or get better results (than Banks is accustomed to) with starting players in the mix. The first would be positive, but IIRC one of the reasons Coach Saban has starters on ST is to improve/prepare opportunities for next level.

Exciting hire...Roll Tide
