Looks like we got another great recruiter and someone that can be a plus to our passing game. Coach Saban always has a plan.

Some where out there
I've peeked at the Penn State boards. Apparently, they loved the guy over there. Every post over there talks about how huge of a loss this is to their program.. Their loss, our gain. I really like this hire.

As we all know by now, whatever Bama wants, Bama gets. Because as said above, Nick Saban and co. are the literal embodiment of imminent death that is coming for you.

Gattis is not only one of the best position coaches in the country, he’s also one of the best recruiters in the country. There’s no other way to put this, the move hurts Penn State and James Franklin will have his work cut out for him finding an adequate replacement.

Stay tuned to BSD as we’ll have more on the story as it continues to develop.

I think all of our replacement coaches will do well.
I believe we have filled our vacancies.
(If not... Coach Saban will pull another Rabbit out of his hat) ;)

Gnashing of Teeth, and Wringing of Hands time is over...
Once again Coach Saban has gone to his 'Little Black Book'
of coaches and found young coaches who should give us the
best chances to maybe win # 18 next year.

This one I really like. He's produced a consistent stream of high-performing receivers.

I didn't really entirely buy the rumors that Saban was gonna push out or reassign most of his on-field staff but that has been exactly what happened. And while I definitely thinking recruiting had a big part in the decision making process, I think we've ended up with our best top to bottom offensive staff since Saban has been here. I like what Key did with the OL this year. I think he's a big upgrade over Cristobal. Gattis is the best receivers coach we've had here (hunch I have is that he gets the TEs in the receiving component of their work). Burns is THE BEST tailback coach.

I think Daboll traded off for Locksley is no worse than a wash and probably an upgrade because he understands the college QB run game. I never felt like our passing game integrated well with our run game in 2017 because the run game was a college power spread offense while the passing game was trying to be a pro pass spread offense. Really lends credence to the rumor that Locksley was basically the run game coordinator to cover down on the lack of knowledge Daboll had with what has been going on in college football since he went to the pros. It only worked with Tua under center because he had the skill set to execute both at a high level. I tend to blame the failure of this offense with Hurts against the highest competition on Daboll not having a good feel for how to call a ball game with a run-first QB that has a strong arm.

Defensive staff is the big question mark for me. There were concerns that Tupoi wouldn't be ready until after year 3 with Pruitt (that never happened due to how weird it got in Knoxville). Pete Golding is a relatively unknown quantity who was the DC at UTSA this past year. Karl Scott was the DB coach at Texas Tech last year...not exactly a defensive powerhouse. Could still not be done with Dunbar possibly going back to the NFL too. Gotta trust Saban there...gonna be a lot of coaching the coaches.

But we got a kick/punt specialist who also is pretty dang good in coverage/returns on special teams too! Imagine a Bama squad that can get consistent performances out of the specialists?

Yea, my take is that Saban has a plan to take over the defense and spending a lot of time teaching the D Staff on his system, it keys, complexity and how to coach it. They are a bright young bunch but Coach will have spend lots of time mentoring this group IMHO.

One thing to look at with this hire as well is how Penn St integrated their backup QB into the game plans at other positions besides QB. He was too good of an athlete to leave off the field, so they would use him at RB and in the slot with some very creative formations and plays. I think this will help find ways to get Jalen on the field in other roles. This is an incredible hire.

Here is a YouTube link of how PSU used him.
