The Notre Dame football program must vacate the 21 wins it accumulated during the 2012 and 2013 seasons after losing an NCAA appeal.

Mike Vorel of the South Bend Tribune provided the update Tuesday. The case was related to a violation of ethical conduct rules by a former student athletic trainer, which was self-reported by the school. The decision to uphold the November 2016 ruling drops the Fighting Irish's all-time win total to 885.

So they vacated the BCSCG before even playing. How efficient. I was wondering why it seemed like we were playing against air.

Re: Notre Dame forfeits 21 wins

I hate the sanctions of forfeiting and vacating of games. Back when we were hit in the 90s I said that the games the team won on the field, but had to forfeit because some suit in a ncaa office decided it was justified, were the most damaging sanctions. Call me Captain Obvious. And it's so arbitrary. About the same time we were hit with those penalties, because Antonio Langham signed a napkin in the celebratory aftermath of the title game vs Miami, Auburn was sanctioned relatively lightly, including the loss of tv games in an era there were 2 or 3 televised regular season games per year, per team, and coaches were providing incentives for players. That's no way fair.

There's a Lou Holtz meme that is more than fitting for this thread but is not TF appropriate. Oh well...

Forfeiting games already played means nothing, fixes nothing, and punishes no one.
Take 2007 for example - no Bama fan out there counts any of those vacated wins as losses. And I don't count them when looking at other teams, either. The games were won on the field, let it go...

Just dumb. The games were played. This changes nothing and just makes looking up a coaches record on Wikipedia more annoying.

I'm NOT a ND fan, but something has to be done about NCAA arbitrariness, and in THIS case I support ND's position, read Dodds piece.

Dodd is usually good for a really dumb analysis piece a quarter. So he's good for Q1 now.

So let me get this straight: the NCAA has spent decades going in deep on Southern and Southwestern football programs, often using legally dubious means to secure their evidence when they have the thirst to nail a school, BUT now when Notre Dame loses 21 wins due to academic fraud the NCAA has picked a battle that will be their end? Yeah sure. The schools tolerate the NCAA because 21 wins in the past lost for significant academic fraud is basically a meaningless punishment. The schools tolerate the NCAA because when they come to chase you down like Ole Miss this year or Alabama in 2002, the alternative is a hard sell for your fellow schools. The NCAA is nearing its end but it won't be due to Notre Dame getting a slap on the wrist. It will be due to the money situation demanding a jettison of the NCAA in favor of some club sport structure to enhance the revenue shared amongst Power 5 conferences.

Re: Notre Dame forfeits 21 wins

I think I read this moves us up 1 spot in all time wins to #6..
But for the truth you have to add 30 to the UA total, which would #2 and closing on Michigan.

1. Michigan 943
2. Yale 902
3. Ohio St. 898
4. Texas 898
5. Nebraska 893
6. Alabama 891
7. Notre Dame 885
8. Oklahoma 884
9. Penn St. 878
10. Harvard 869
11. Penn 850
12. USC 834
13. Tennessee 833
14. Princeton 822
15. Georgia 808
16. LSU 787

Anything that can help to recruit, even by whatever small degree, is to that degree important, imo.
