Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)
Also, I know you didn't say this but I think it would be a HUGE mistake to only have Tua run as a last resort. Dude is a threat running the ball and its a skill set that should be and likely will be used.
I don't think you can ignore speed/agility when discussing how good a runner a QB is. AJ was good for his level of athleticism but Tua is on another level than AJ as a runner. Maybe calling AJ efficient would be better? idk but good feels like a huge stretch.I think you are confusing "good" with other words like "fast" but when I think about a good runner that means he's effective when he does it.
AJ was "good" in that he knew exactly when to take off. Now I'm not talking about "scrambling" ability and avoiding getting sacked under pressure. Yes, I think Tua will be much better than AJ about that.
But AJ had a good "feel" for when the called play was covered to the point that (when green grass was in front of him) he knew when he could take off and get a sizeable gain. I think he was very "good" at understanding this. He wasn't a "fast" runner (probably 4.8 on the 40 if I had to guess) but he was deadly at times to improvise and get an easy 5 to 10 yards when receivers weren't open.
