I'll just be glad to see that all receivers in the route tree are in play for the entire play. How drastic the aggressiveness of a defense drops off when three or four wr's are actively catching balls.
Hard to be in play regardless of the QB with our route tree scheming last year. Hopefully the new staff is overhauling our approach there.

Glad to see no break for Tua.

The plays last year weren't really the problem in getting all the receivers involved. We ran the same passing concepts in the second half against UGA that we'd run the entire year. Just different guy making the reads

Better decision making produced much better results.

How’d we go from broken thumb to only a sprain? Nonetheless awesome news, reps are very important, doesn’t matter how good he is
Likely the first x-rays were poorly seen (ie might have shown a break, might have not) so they sent him to the specialist to be sure.

A side note: I know that tidefans doesn't like a lot of new treads in the football forum, but I think your presumed starter at QB possibly missing the entire spring with a busted thumb on his throwing hand is probably worth one.

Or, the x-rays had to wait, and they were going on appearance, pain, and manipulation of the joints/muscles/etc.

Saw Sam Darnold's pro day passing workout from yesterday in the rain and some of Baker Mayfield's workout over the last several days.

Just not impressed with either of these guys in relation to some of the successful QB's in the NFL.

It reminds me of how high our expectations are on QB's at Alabama. As difficult as it is to project it causes me to believe that both Tua or JH may end up being more talented athletically than these two.

Although I know we really want to see Tua in the Spring game and hear reports about him torching our new secondary, I really wonder if when CNS first heard about Tua's thumb injury if he kinda smiled inside and thought, "Ah, this will stifle the expectation and take some of the pressure off of Tua and Jalen and allow us to not say much about QB play until the fall."

For the record, I hope Tua only participates gingerly and just gets more comfortable in the newish system.

It would definitely pro-long the QB "competition".

Exactly. With this development (and even if Tua participates in spring ball to some extent) I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't learn who's starting until the offense runs out agains the Cards next September.

FWIW, I think the odds on favorite has to be Tua, but I really think CNS would prefer to keep in close to the vest, partly out of respect for JH's contributions to the program.

Provided, of course, that they`re both here for this season, a part of me thinks it would be more than a little cool if we had a scheme or two in which they were both on the field at the same time. The place would blow up if they both trotted out on the field for the first O series against Louisville! I know......won`t happen.....but it`s fun to think about.

Even with both healthy, I fully expected this to be the case.

I don't know any more about Tua's injury than what's been on TF. But even if it's just soft-tissue damage, that can take a while for swelling to go down and strength to come back.

Point being, I'll be interested to see if he can grip the ball with enough force to pass it with some authority. If not, even if he does nominally participate in drills, we might not know much more about Tua on April 22 than we do right now.

Jalen is a different story. We should get at least a preliminary gauge on the extent of his improvement.

Who knows??? I don't think it would be a regular practice because who do we take out to let JH replace? But a few random plays...yeah...could be interesting.

But Hurts had good practices last spring and the news was that he was much improved.
This is the down side to JH getting more of the reps. It's not that we don't won't him to improve because everyone does, but with the type of rushing rules we have at A-day, he may do exactly what he did last year and stand back there and hit some big plays and make everyone think he's turned the corner. So it's a catch 22 if he looks good to the casual observer because it stoke the debate among us fans.

But, to the coaching staff, I doubt it will have very little impact on QB order next fall. IOW, I'm of the opinion that Tua is so far ahead of Jalen in passing ability, mechanics, footwork, reading defenses, etc. that even with a giant step forward, Tua is still going to be out front.

You're right. Practice is different than game situations because in real game situations you know the defense is really trying hard to get you and slam you to the ground while in practice that is not the case. Which QB can stay calm and make the reads in real game situations is what counts.

Injury update: Tua Tagovailoa could begin throwing next week

From the preview of the article - Tua didn't injure his thumb. He broke the metacarpal bone between the thumb and index finger but should be able to begin throwing again next week and making a complete recover in 2-3.
Metacarpal isn’t between the thumb and index. Your metacarpals are the 5 bones at the base of your fingers and thumbs, so it looks like he broke that bone at the base of his thumb. Good news that he will be back throwing quickly.
