Allen said he want to invest more in the Weather Channel, expanding both its international and local distribution. It’s part of a broader strategy to invest what he said would be billions of dollars in the media and entertainment industry.

The Comcast-Blackstone-Bain-led group had purchased the Weather Channel in 2008 for about $3.5 billion. A spokesman for Blackstone declined to comment.
Why was it only $300M. No one has mentioned that part

I imagine it's a mix of things.

- Cord cutters - same problem ESPN and other cable channels have
- Folks are getting their weather online or from their mobile devices
- Deal did not online assets such as the website Weather.com and related mobile apps

I think it's because they spend so much time covering everything besides the weather ("Ice Road Truckers: How the Weather Effected the Filming of the Series") and (a big-time personal peeve of mine about weathermen) their dadgum weathermen stand in front of the dadgum weather map, saying, "Man you should see this huge storm I'm looking at but you can't see where it is because I'm standing in front of the map."

I see a weatherman standing in front of the map and I want to aim my M1 Garand at him and tell him to "Get off my screen."

My son hit the nail on the head. Why has the value of Weather Channel dropped? "Because every carries his own personal weatherman in his pocket with forecasts for their specific zip code. With that specificity, why wait for 'Local on the 8s?'"

as often the media is being super lazy, I only knew to look elsewhere as I follow the giant tech companies as a career obligation. IBM Paid more than 2 Billion for some part of the Weather Channel in 2016. People in my business have been scratching their heads on that investment for years. I get it but not for the price https://www.marketwatch.com/story/ibm-finally-reveals-why-it-bought-the-weather-company-2016-06-15

Here's what they bought:
IBM announced Wednesday that it has purchased the Weather Company. It is essentially buying everything except the actual TV network. IBM is taking the Weather Company's digital assets, including the uber-popular Weather Channel mobile app, weather.com, and -- most crucially for IBM -- all the company's forecasting data and technology.

I've noticed the Power by Watson logo a lot. Maybe a $2billion advertisement for Watson?
