The Volunteers came away with a 2-1 win in game one before a 3-0 shutout victory in the day’s second contest

3/25/2018

KNOXVILLE, TN –
Alabama baseball fell in both games of the Sunday's doubleheader with Tennessee at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. The Volunteers came away with a 2-1 win in game one before a 3-0 victory in the series finale. Following the weekend with Tennessee, the Crimson Tide is 16-9 overall and 1-5 in Southeastern Conference play.

"Those were two tough SEC losses that we had chances to win today," said Alabama head coach Brad Bohannon. "Tennessee did a great job of taking advantage of our mistakes in the two bad innings. (Garrett) Stallings and (Will) Neely did a good job of making us earn everything we got in both games, and we just couldn't string enough hits together."

Alabama took a 1-0 lead into the sixth inning, but a pair of Tide miscues led to two unearned runs for UT in the game-one win. The Crimson Tide then fell, 3-0, in game two as the Vols opened up with a 2-0 lead after one inning of play, adding a third run in the sixth to secure the win.

Next up for the Crimson Tide is a trip to Montgomery to face off with Auburn for the annual MAX Capital City Classic on Tuesday evening. The non-conference contest is scheduled for a 6:35 p.m. CT first pitch at Riverwalk Stadium, home to the Montgomery Biscuits.

GAME ONE

The Crimson Tide fell, 2-1, in game one of the doubleheader. After gaining the lead in the fifth, the Tide allowed two unearned runs in the sixth to suffer the loss.

Alabama got its run in the fifth. Junior Matt Malkin began the rally with a two-out single. The Tide backstop was then replaced by a pinch-runner in redshirt sophomore Connor Stutts. In the next at-bat, junior Keith Holcombe sent a grounder to second that the defender passed on throwing the ball to first, eventually deciding to try to get Stutts out at third. The throw sailed out of play and was a dead ball, advancing both runners and bringing Stutts in for the first run of the day.

Tennessee answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to earn the victory. In that sixth, an errant throw with two down extended the inning and allowed the tying run to score for Tennessee. A walk followed to load the bases before one more free pass brought in the game-winning run. Alabama would get a runner to third with two down in the ninth, but the Vols closed it out with a strikeout looking.

The tight game featured two impressive pitching performances from each team's starter, with Alabama's Jake Walters (2-3) suffering the hard-luck loss. The senior worked 5.2 innings, allowing two unearned runs on only four hits and two walks. Walters provided the Tide with his best start of the season, not allowing a hit until the fourth inning and striking out a season-high nine batters, which matched his most for a single game in SEC play for his career.

GAME TWO

Alabama suffered a 3-0 shutout loss in game two of the afternoon.

Tennessee jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first. The Vols drew a walk with one down before back-to-back singles with an error on the second hit plated a pair of unearned runs. In the sixth, Tennessee added one more. A leadoff single and a wild pitch put a runner in scoring position before a two-out single to right crossed one more, making it a 3-0 game, the eventual final.

Alabama received another strong game from its arms. Starter Garret Rukes contributed 3.0 innings, allowing two runs – both unearned – on three hits and two walks while striking out four. The redshirt freshman handed the ball over to redshirt sophomore Kyle Cameron out of the bullpen. Cameron allowed one earned run on four hits with two strikeouts across his 3.0 relief innings to keep the Crimson Tide within striking distance.
