Ahead of a summit next week between North Korean premier Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, lawmakers from the neighboring states were thought to be negotiating the details of a joint statement that could outline an end to the confrontation.

Kim and Moon could also discuss returning the heavily fortified demilitarized zone separating them to its original state, the newspaper said.

Pyongyang and Seoul have technically been at war since the 1950-1953 Korean conflict ended with a truce — and not a peace treaty. Geopolitical tensions have occasionally flared up since the armistice, although to date both countries have managed to avoid another devastating conflict.

In other words, North Korea is broken economically. They want the influx of S. Korean & UN money to fix the infrastructure, and lil Kim will retire to Hong Kong or Switzerland...maybe even Argentina.

It would be a step in the right direction if a peace treaty could be signed but nukes are the big issue to be solved.

Agreed on all counts. More interested to see how the negotiations play out, but it starts with a signed peace treaty, and all parties respecting the peace treaty.

I wonder how much if any influence the Chinese will have on what is in the peace treaty as the U.S. has troops there but the Chinese do not. They don't want the U.S. in their backyard.

I agree that is one of the key factors. Kim must go. I'm not sure that he will agree to that, but I hope so. Otherwise, any agreement will certainly be pretty dubious.
