Crimson Tide splits the season series with the Bulldogs

4/17/2018

TUSCALOOSA, AL –
Alabama baseball suffered a 6-0 loss to Samford on Tuesday night at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. Following the midweek pairing, the Crimson Tide is now 21-17 on the season.

"It was a really poor effort from our guys," said Alabama head coach Brad Bohannon. "I thought it was our lowest level of energy; we had the least amount of focus and competitiveness at the plate; and we made three errors. We really didn't do anything well tonight against a really good Samford team."

The Bulldogs used three arms to blank Alabama, highlighted by starter Hamp Skinner (4-1), who earned the win thanks to 5.0 scoreless frames. Crimson Tide starter Mason Duke (2-2) took the loss, with the junior giving up three runs (two earned) in his 2.0 innings of work.

Samford gained a 2-0 advantage after the first. Back-to-back one out singles followed by a fielder's choice put runners on the corners for SU, with RBI-singles to follow in each of the next two at-bats. The Bulldogs widened the gap in the third, using a single to start the inning and two Tide miscues to move the leadoff man to third. One more single followed to make it a three-run Bulldog lead. Samford then added two more runs in the ninth to secure the 6-0 win.

The two teams split the 2018 home-and-home series, with Alabama claiming a 13-3 win in the first matchup on Feb. 27 in Birmingham.

Alabama will return to the diamond on Wednesday evening for a single matchup with Alcorn State. The Crimson Tide and Braves are scheduled for a 6 p.m. CT first pitch on SEC Network+, with junior left-hander Dylan Duarte getting the starting nod for UA.

Worst loss of the year, not necessarily because it was Samford, but the hitting and pitching (and fielding) just weren't there. I think Coach Bo echo'd those sentiments, post-game.
