4/20/2018

TUSCALOOSA, AL –
Alabama baseball will welcome back the 1968 Crimson Tide team on Saturday evening at Sewell-Thomas Stadium to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its Southeastern Conference Championship.

The 1968 team finished 24-14 overall, including an 11-8 mark in the SEC, under the direction of head coach Joe Sewell. The team won six of its last seven conference games to force a one-game playoff with LSU in Baton Rouge to determine the SEC Western Division champion. Alabama beat LSU, 6-4, in the only one-game playoff in league history to advance to the best-of-three SEC Championship against Eastern Division champ Florida.

After losing the first game in Gainesville, Alabama posted consecutive wins in Tuscaloosa, beating Florida 5-0 and 3-0 to earn the school's first SEC baseball title since 1955. The Crimson Tide then advanced to the NCAA District III Playoffs in Gastonia, N.C., where it lost two games to N.C. State and Florida State.

Five members of the 1968 team were drafted into Major League Baseball, including Stan Moss (Boston Red Sox), Jackie Glover (Oakland), Jack Traffenstedt (Oakland), Eddie Propst (San Diego) and J.C. Ranelli (Pittsburgh).

A trio of Tide players, including pitchers Mike Innes and Propst along with third baseman Stan Moss, were all named First Team All-SEC. Innes, Propst, Ranelli, Moss and outfielder Bill Parker were named to the SEC All-Western Division Team. Innes was also an ABCA All-South Region selection.

Attending tomorrow's 1968 SEC Championship reunion are: Foots Parnell (representing his grandfather, head coach Joe Sewell); student trainers Leon Ashford and Vince Stuedeman; student coaches Hoss Bowlin and Tommy Limbaugh; and former players Frank Cargo, Mike Cox, Jack Glover, Larry Guyton, Mike Innes, Joe Kelley, Sammy Knox, Lee Medwick, David Mewbourne, Stan Moss, Bill Parker, John Peck, Eddie Propst, Randy Quick, J.C.
