TUSCALOOSA, AL – Alabama baseball fell in both games of Saturday's doubleheader with 25th-ranked Auburn at Sewell-Thomas Stadium. The Tigers came away with a 5-0 win in game one before claiming a 20-5 victory in the series finale. Following the series with Auburn, the Crimson Tide moves to 22-20 overall and 5-13 in Southeastern Conference play.
Auburn scored one run in the third and added a pair in the fifth to take a 3-0 lead in game one. The Tigers collected single tallies in the seventh and ninth for the 5-0 win to start the twinbill. The Crimson Tide then fell, 20-5, in game two, as Auburn claimed the series sweep.
Next up for Alabama is a midweek matchup with in-state foe Troy on Tuesday evening at Sewell-Thomas Stadium to close out the Tide's current six-game homestand. The Crimson Tide and Trojans are scheduled for a 6 p.m. CT first pitch on SEC Network+.
GAME ONE
Alabama baseball was shut out by Auburn, 5-0, in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.
The Tiger duo of starter Tanner Burns (3-4) and Cody Greenhill combined for the shutout win, with Burns earning his third victory of the season. Alabama starter Jake Walters suffered the loss despite a strong outing that saw the senior strike out seven in 6.0 innings of work.
Auburn began the day's scoring with one run in the top of the third to gain the early advantage. The Tigers made it a 3-0 game in the fifth, scoring two runs to extend the lead, and added single tallies in the seventh and ninth to widen the deficit to 5-0, the eventual final.
Junior Cobie Vance led the Tide in hitting, contributing a 2-for-4 game with a double. Fellow juniors Joe Breaux, Chandler Taylor and Jett Manning each collected a double in the contest, while senior Chandler Avant recorded a base knock to round out the Alabama offensive totals.
GAME TWO
Alabama suffered a 20-5 defeat in game two of the doubleheader with Auburn.
The Auburn bats recorded 19 hits and tallied nine walks on the way to 20 runs. The Tiger offense scored eight runs across the first four innings to take an 8-0 lead. Alabama responded with four runs of its own in the fifth, before Auburn rallied to put the game away with 11 runs in the eighth for the win.
Auburn jumped out in front first, scoring three in the top of the third. The Tigers put together a five-run frame in the fifth to add to the lead, making it an 8-0 contest heading to the home half of the fifth.
The Crimson Tide got on the board in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs to trim the deficit in half. Junior Matt Malkin began the scoring sequence, reaching on a one-out walk. Back-to-back singles from Vance and Breaux loaded the bases for Avant, who delivered a RBI-single to score two. After a groundout advanced runners to second and third, senior Hunter Alexander drew a walk to load the bases for the second time in the inning. Keith Holcombe capitalized on the opportunity, with the junior sending an RBI-double to right-center to plate two and make it an 8-4 game after five full.
The Tigers responded, adding a single tally in the sixth to increase the AU lead to 9-4. Alabama answered back, scoring one run in the next half inning.
Manning kicked off the frame with a double to right-center before advancing to third on a flyout to left. In the next at-bat, Vance singled, allowing Manning to score and trimming the margin to 9-5.
Auburn collected 11 runs in the top of the eighth to put the game out of reach. The Tigers recorded the runs on six hits, four walks and a hit-by-pitch to set the score at 20-5, the eventual final.
Alabama received another strong performance from Vance, who paced the Alabama offense in game two, as well. The junior went 2-for-5 with an RBI and one run scored for his 14th multi-hit effort of the season.
