This is a fundamental thing that people don't understand about government and property rights, specifically.
They believe that they own their land. They have a deed and they think that means they own their land.
In reality, only two entities claim ownership over land in the U.S.: the U.S. Government and the State Government of the State in which the property is located.
All you really "own" are the rights to lawfully use your property as you wish for as long as both of those governments choose to allow you to do so.
