South Alabama
I had a conversation with a few of my friends the other day. One is a FSU fan. We got to talking about the 90’s and got to the rivalry of the 90’s question. I said FSU-Miami in the early 90’s, and my FSU friend agreed. But my other friend noted Spurrier rarely got blown out and was sometimes the guy that kept Bobby up at night. I looked and was surprised by how close SS kept games compared to the post sanctioned Canes.

I switched to UF after looking at it. But my FSU friend said the weird near wins in the early 90’s trump the close Games and Sugar Bowls that UF played with them in

From someone not in the South - Miami vs FSU was HUGE. I remember many of those games. I don't really remember any of the FSU - UF games.

Lol. Somehow I knew someone would say that. But I guess it’s fair, but if you were to tell someone to watch the best rivalry out of the two... which would it be? Which was more memorable?

Miami vs FSU really was the bigger rivalry. Consider that in 1994, it was Miami (not FSU or Florida) who got the chance to win the national title against Nebraska because the Canes had again beaten FSU.

What GAMES were memorable in the Florida-FSU series by people who were not fans of either team (no disrespect Bazza)?

1994 - the Choke at Doak
1996 - the narrow win that had a rematch
1997 - a great game

There were rematches two of those years and most folks don't remember them.

Now......what GAMES were memorable for FSU-Miami?

1987
1988
1989
1991
1992
1994
2000

So I'd have to go with this one being bigger nationally. Most of those games were pretty close and the 1988 game was being touted prior to the season as the place where FSU would avenge the narrow loss of 87.

In fact, the 94 FSU-Florida game is only remembered because of something insanely stupid, Florida choking. Had they won that game 31-17, nobody would even remember it.

They did sort of meet for the national title once, but it was a blowout with Florida winning.

The 1991 UF-FSU game was very good but nobody remembers it because two weeks earlier we'd listened all year to Miami-FSU like LSU/Alabama in 2011......so even though Florida won a good close game, it doesn't register nationally.

Of the top of my head I wanna say FSU and Miami for the early 90's but FSU and FLA for the Mid-Late 90's. Let's look at them year by year.

1990 - #3 Miami (10-2) #4 FSU (10-2) #13 FLA (9-2) - Miami beat FSU 31-22 and FSU beat FLA 45-30

1991 - #1 Miami (12-0) #4 FSU (10-2) #7 FLA (10-2) - Miami beat FSU 17-16 and FLA beat FSU 14-9

1992 - #3 Miami (11-1) #2 FSU (11-1) #10 FLA (9-4) - Miami beat FSU 19-16 and FSU beat FLA 45-24

1993 - #15 Miami (9-3) #1 FSU (12-1) #5 FLA (11-2) - FSU beat Miami 28-10 and FSU beat FLA 33-21

1994 - #6 Miami (10-2) #4 FSU (10-1-1) #7 FLA (10-2-1) Miami beat FSU 34-20 and FSU Tied FLA 31-31 Then beat them 23-17

1995 - #20 Miami (8-3) #4 FSU (10-2) #2 FLA (12-1) FSU beat Miami 41-17 and FLA beat FSU 35-24

1996 - #14 Miami (9-3) #3 FSU (11-1) #1 FLA (12-1) FSU beat Miami 34-16 and FSU beat FLA 24-21 THEN FLA beat FSU 52-20

1997 - NR Miami (5-7) #3 FSU (11-1) #4 FLA (10-2) FSU beat Miami 47-0 and FLA beat FSU 32-29

1998 - #20 Miami (9-3) #3 FSU (11-2) #5 FLA (10-2) FSU beat Miami 26-14 and beat FLA 23-12

1999 - #15 Miami (9-4) #1 FSU (12-0) #12 FLA (9-4) FSU beat Miami 31-21 and beat FLA 30-23

For the Decade FSU was 6-4 vs Miami and beat them by a combined score of 281-179 or an average score of 28-18

For the Decade FSU was 7-4-1 vs FLA and beat them by a combined score of 336-312 or an average score of 28-26

Florida St wins BOTH series by similiar W/L margins but they dominated Miami after 1992 winning 6 out of 7 beating them by double digits every time.

The series with Florida was MUCH closer on the scoreboards. 5 games were decided by 1 score and they also tied once. Half of the games were close contests.

After looking at it all I'd say because of Miami's decline from National relevance and getting destroyed by FSU for the majority of the decade kind of rules them out.

Florida stayed mostly Nationally Relevant the whole Decade along with FSU and the series was very back and forth. FSU only won 2 in a row twice (92-93) and (98-99).

My Vote goes for FSU vs Florida being the better 90's rivalry. It was much closer and the stats back that up.

One thing to remember - the Miami vs FSU rivalry started in the 80's and extended into the 2000s. By limiting this to only the 90s to chop off about 6 years of great games between the two schools when they were both in title hunts (and during those years, FL was not). When I think about the 90s, my mind (not being like Selma's) includes this entire era, not just 10 games. And FSU played Miami in far more meaningful games during that era than they did FL.
