Compiled by a subset of the Davey O’Brien National Selection Committee, this year’s list was selected based on player performance during the previous year and expectations heading into the 2018 college football season. All nominees are required to have previously started at least one game at their current institution. In addition, any player who was a finalist or semifinalist the previous year is automatically included.
A pair of two-time semifinalists, Jake Browning of Washington and Alabama’s Jalen Hurts, are among the players named to the list. Other previous semifinalists, all from 2017, include: Kelly Bryant of Clemson, Mississippi State’s Nick Fitzgerald, Will Grier of West Virginia, Penn State’s Trace McSorley, McKenzie Milton of UCF and Arizona’s Khalil Tate
I mean, it probably works most of the time. This is just a rare occurrence of a solid QB being replaced by a possibly great QBIt’s a flaw in their selection criteria.
Returning finalists and semi-finalists from the previous year are automatically included. So Jalen’s being on the 2018 watch list is based mostly on his actual performance in 2016, not his anticipated performance in 2018.
That’s a bad process.
Preseason watch lists are mostly useless and lame anyway. None more so than the Bobby Dodd coach of the year watch list that came out a week ago. What will be weird if if a QB wins it that's not on the watch list. I guess they can add them as we go along
True! And they seem to often ignore the very best for guys who surprise. I guess this is to avoid handing it out to CNS every other year, but a strong case could be argued that in the last 10 years he was the best coach in 5 of those years (based on results).Preseason watch lists are mostly useless and lame anyway. All they did was list the most successful coaches in college football right now when the very nature of the award means
it usually goes to a coach who surprises everyone with a successful year.
