Great lists, taking me back to when I first saw them.

My favorite recent ones (defined as the last 25 years) are No Country For Old Men ("You don't have to do this."), Unforgiven (the scarred prostitute), and Dances With Wolves-- the opening scene in the Civil War, and the scene where he earns his name, both stick with me today.

JMHO, but I think Dances With Wolves it a forever classic.

Most of mine are already listed. High Noon tops my list. I would add The Shootist, The Magnificent Seven, Hostiles, and Big Jake. And Lonesome Dove, if allowed.

Still waiting for someone to make Cormac McCarthy’s “Blood Meridian” into a movie. If you haven’t read the book, don’t.

Not a big western fan, but I love all three of these:
1) Unforgiven
2) No Country For Old Men (had to think about it before I considered this a western)
3) Tombstone (a bit campy, but I cannot not watch it when it's on)

I'd add A River Runs Through It in the not obviously a Western category.

THIS!

An astonishing book, I don't see how they could ever make it into a movie...
Agree. It left me with many horrific, nihilistic images; but I only recall one phrase:
“The gang ... rode north ... and turned their tragic mounts to the west ... toward the red demise of that day.” I remember thinking that now McCarthy has got me thinking that even the horses are complicit in the carnage. What kind of book does that?

I forgot about The Wild Bunch and The Long Riders. Since I forgot them, they must not be in my top ten. But one thing I always ask myself is whether I can sit and watch the whole movie through the second time, or multiple times. Those two qualify, while some of the great movies listed by others don’t. So my top ten is heavily influenced by my personal butt rating. I would love to be able to watch Dances With Wolves all the way through again, but I just can’t.
