I had the last 3 numbers in Friday’s Mega Millions. 10 bucks. I looked at my ticket last night. Yikes. Not close on the first 2 numbers and the mega ball. Took my winnings and bought 5 more mega million tickets for tomorrow’s drawing. I’m feelin lucky. I won 4 bucks in last Tuesday’s mega drawing.

I just looked at it, and I'm hosed.

There are only six states where you can remain anonymous:
North Dakota (because nobody lives there anyway)
Delaware (same)
Kansas (even worse)
Maryland
Ohio
South Carolina

All other states require public identification.

I guess the first thing would be to disconnect my phone and change my name. And given that my ex-wife is a gold digging fool, I'd likely leave the country for awhile.

HMMMMM.........................we may never know the name...........

Well I haven’t checked my tickets, but since I bought them in TN, I guess I didn’t win. Oh well, still got shots tonight, Friday and Saturday :D

I saw a bunch of people on Facebook talking about tickets being $10. I tried telling them they got scammed, but I don't think they believed me. They swore it was $10 for 1 ticket.

I am not big on conspiracies but don't you think it is interesting that only one ticket won and it just happens to be in a state where they do not have to disclose who the winner is?

I have a coworker that won $2 as well. The only problem is she bought it while on vacation in Texas and you have to collect in the state you won.

I didn't buy any because I already have a system for the lottery.

Twice a year I buy a regular 6 number Lotto ticket for 52 advance draws. I use the same 6 numbers - not quick pics - numbers taken from certain calendar dates.

This gives me two draws per week for half a year.

After a half year is up I bring the ticket in to be checked for possible winners and renew it for the next 6 months.

The reason I do it this way is it minimizes how much time & effort I spend on the lottery. Two visits a year to the local Publix and I'm good. Of course I end up spending $104/year, but for me it's money well spent....especially considering the potential payout(s).

And yes...these 6 numbers have proved to bring in some results. Just not the big one...yet.

Good luck!

So if you buy the ticket say, Aug. 1 and don't check it until January, what happens if say you won the drawing August 2nd? Would that money just sit there waiting on you for 6 months?

<----This guy. Just donates money to the lottery without knowing how it works!

Yes....it would be waiting for me to claim it.

Part of my reasoning is not to let the lottery dictate how I live my life. At least not until I get all 6 numbers...:cheers2:

9: 1 custom home - not large, but I'd just like to design and build my own home. Something simple but on a good amount of land.
10: Planned giving through the charity where I currently work. Would love to be able to quit but keep working by targeting the programs I see having the most impact.

I go to work the next day. Then I probably sign a re-enlistment bonus for $90k for 3 years. May sound crazy to you but the fact is, I'm miserable when I'm not at work. I'm just not happy as a person without something to drive me, and my job gives me that.

The wife said I was a fool, but I'm already at a point that I could get out and have lifelong retirement of around $65k a year after taxes starting now for life and I'm not 40 yet. Just not am appealing option for me.

So....

1. Keep working
2. Actually use my leave more often to take the wife on vacations.
3. Buy so many stupid/pointless cars (ranging from Mercedes g wagons to 1996 Subaru WRXs to 78/79 Broncos) that Jay Leno gets jealous.
4. Get season tickets in a good spot
5. Keep my white trash/ghetto family as far away as possible.
6. Keep everything else the same.

Unless you spend money on the lottery to the extent that it affects other parts of your life (which really indicates compulsion along the lines of compulsive gambling), what the lottery really sells is the daydream that this thread asks about.

You put a few bucks in, and you think about what you'd do if it hits. You know the odds are astronomical. But you're in, so the odds aren't zero. Then the drawing happens, and you don't come close to winning -- as you knew you probably wouldn't. You say a non-TF word, and get back to what you were doing.

Most people who buy lottery tickets aren't making an investment, or anything near it. They're buying an inexpensive daydream.

My personal daydream is spending January 15 through April in the Palma Ceia area of Tampa. May through September 15 in New England, and September 15 through January 15 in Tuscaloosa. Vacations in Paris, on Ile St. Louis, with ancillary trips throughout Europe, and first class travel between all of those.

My dad has always said the lottery is a tax on poor people. What does this mean? Of course, my dad doesn’t care to throw money away on gambling at casinos and the lottery, so not sure of his point. LOL.

Most of the tickets are purchased by poor people, hoping to get rich; the people who can least afford to buy them, that’s what it means.
I disagree with that, because I work with some guys (retired) who buy tickets every time we go to Pensacola, and nary a one of them is anything closely resembling poor; more like upper middle class. Most of the “less well off” folks I work with don’t buy lottery tickets or go to the casinos.
Floyd Mayweather bought $2000 worth when it was really high a week or two ago.
So, it is a tax on anyone who “wants” to buy a ticket, just like anyone who “wants” to smoke cigarettes or drink alcohol pays extra taxes. It’s just that it’s elective, not like a sales tax or gasoline tax which pretty much everyone pays.
