Last year’s version was filled with my attempts at humor, as I saw very few paths to victory. I’m feeling a little bit different this year, so here we go and in no particular order
1) LSU’s DBs - Everyone talks about Greedy, but the guy across the field, Kristian Fulton, may be just as good. Grant Delpit is an amazing safety who gets better each game. All 3 will play on Sundays and probably all will be drafted in round 1 (Fulton if he stays next year). The X factor is Kary Vincent at nickel. He, too, keeps getting better and he has world class speed. The weak point is the SS Battle, even though he has 3 ints. Bama’s WRs vs LSUs DBs will be fun to watch.
2) LSU has been doubted all year. Predicted to win as few as 5 games by some, 7.5 by Vegas (I’m almost guaranteed to cash in that “over” bet), this team continues to defy the odds. Not shockingly, as a 14.5 point underdog, they are doubted once again.
3) LSUs OL is the healthiest it’s been all year. We’ve started 7 different combinations of OL in 8 games. Lots of experienced gained and depth established. We are finally at a point where we can put the best 5 out there.
4) LSUs kicking game is the best all around unit I’ve ever seen for us. If it comes down to FGs, I like our chances with Cole Tracey. He is deadly accurate, only missing two FGs both from plus 50, one going off the bottom bar. We have 2 good punters, one for distance and one for touch. Our kickoff specialist makes kick off returns virtually non existent.
5) LSU has quality talent from top to bottom. While this may be seen as David v Goliath, David isn’t exactly a puny fellow.
6) The game is at night in Tiger Stadium and the crowd will be electric. Game day will be there. Weather is supposed to be amazing. No rain. Perfect conditions, no excuses for fans not to pack the house.
7) LSU has been challenged more, we are battle tested if you will. Bama hasn’t been challenged at all with all wins coming via blowout. We’ve fought hard and have faced adversity.
8) LSU has finally closed the gap with respects to coaching analysts on staff. I don’t think the average fan understands what a huge difference that makes.
9) Les Miles won’t be on the sideline. The Jan 2012 BCS game changed him forever. It showed in his demeanor before and in the weeks after the Bama game. The team was affected by it. He was hard headed, going so far as to say the way to beat Bama is to attack their strength. That was grounds for termination in my opinion! Say what you will about Orgeron, but he has a quality staff and he is letting them coach.
10) It means more to LSU. You can argue with me on this one, but I believe Bama has established enough collateral to where you are a near lock for the playoffs, even with a loss. There may be Bama fatigue for fans. But, the people that matter, the committee, know that Bama is, at a minimum, a top 4 team. They don’t want to get it wrong.
My title is reasons we CAN win. I’m a doubter this week (see #2). I think Bama is still too much, especially with Tua. Any other QB and I like our chances. I hope it’s a good one and I’ll be here next week win or lose. For those of you going, enjoy. I hope we give you a great experience.
