if only thoughts and prayers were armed
Bars are gun free zones. That’s why this happened. Had people had been allowed to have a gun while drinking at the bar, this wouldn’t have happened.

I can't imagine how lost someone has to be to do something like this. I wonder if a bouncer with one of those metal detector wands could have made a difference. They can be bought for under a 100 bucks on amazon. Seems like a common sense safety measure. Add a dollar to every Fireball Shot to cover any added expense.

I read that the shooter was a vet who suffered from PSD and legally bought a gun. Can’t a psychiatrist/psychologist put someone on a list to keep them from legally buying a gun? Honest question...

Realistically, I think that Genie is already out of the bottle. It's too easy to get a gun without registering it. I have bought several at Estate sales...even at Garage sales, heck even many ads on Craigslist state "willing to trade for things that go bang". Granted it would make it harder to legally obtain a gun for the people on said list, but not necessarily harder to obtain a gun.

I think it's a good question and I don't know the answer. Maybe Staci can chime in, if she reads this.

The mental health aspect of these shootings is what I always come back to - how can we find a constitutionally correct way to screen out those deemed unfit for gun ownership?

Until that happens....I feel we will continue to see incidents like this.

I believe everyone would be in agreement if there was a checks and balances to a psychiatric review of know persons with mental issues being on the no guns list.

From CNN:

Police had several contacts with Long previously. In April, officers responded to a disturbance at Long's home, and he was somewhat irate and acting irrationally, Dean said. A mental health specialist met with him and ultimately decided not to detain him under laws pertaining to his mental health.

Dean said that a crisis team that visited Long felt the military veteran might be suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Seems like an awful lot of red flags. Not sure what could have been done, but man it seems like something could have been done. The same article said his mother lived in fear of what he may do...

Seems like there's always red flags.

I would like to think I would act on them if I ever saw them, myself. I've seen a LOT of goofy acting people in my day - especially living in Florida - but can't say I've ever seen anyone I thought could do this kind of thing.

How would someone know?

Law enforcement has their hands tied, it seems.

this is why I avoid “hero-worship” in regards to service members in general.
Some come back broken and dangerous and our country provides woefully inadequate support and care; another argument for either Medicare for all or universal healthcare.
No one should “fall through the cracks”, veterans or not.
