Smart seemed to try to develop Fields the way Meyer developed Tebow. Spot plays , running mostly. Special situations. Game time with a little pressure. Instead of long periods of mop up.

What is Jacob Eason doing these days? I know he transferred to Washington, but I assume he sat out a year due to transferring. He should be able to start now that Browning is graduating.

Re: Justin Fields (potentially) Leaving Georgia

A lot of his rushes were called passes. Not sure the exact number, but I'd guess they called at least 50 passes, not 39.
I would love to see a breakdown by someone if possible. Taking the cupcakes out, his stats from the 8 games he recorded stats look like:

9-15
73 yards
0 TDs

29 rushes
102 yards
2 TDs

Those numbers don't really indicate they gave him much of a chance to throw outside of the easy games.
Justin fields released a statement last night saying he is transferring.
He did? No one appears to be reporting it.

Re: Justin Fields Leaving Georgia

Just change the name of Fields to Jalen or Tua and it's basically the same story.

The things we don't know about the Fields situation vs. Jalen and Tua is what the HC told them. We know what CNS told Jalen and Tua, but we don't know what Kirby told Fields.

Judging, based on what is happening, is Kirby made promises his butt couldn't keep.
I think it's a night and day comparison. By all accounts, everyone internally knew Tua was the better QB between him and Jalen, but Saban was being overly loyal to Jalen. Fromm proved himself last year to be a very effective QB, not just a game manager as he has sometimes been described, and this year he has looked great since the LSU game. In other words, UGA didn't miss the CFP because of QB performance.

I'm referring more to how all three committed knowing there was a guy entrenched/playing good ball in front of them and how their HC's handled their recruitment and what he told them.

Edit: Jalen didn't have an entrenched starter in front of him, but most probably thought the job was Blake Barnetts since he had been in the program a year.

Yeah but the only real game he played in he was 1-2 for 5 yards. In that same game he had 45 yards rushing. Everything else was just mop up to a few runs here and there. He was a running qb, and was never used to pass in games where it was meaningful. Kirby putting him out was just telling everyone that he was running.

Re: Justin Fields (potentially) Leaving Georgia

Transferring to OU would be interesting but risky. The QB room at OU is potentially very talented after KM leaves. KENDALL, our #2 is pretty darn good but the real competition will come from Tanner Mordecai and Spencer Rattler. It's been done before...Mayfield, but Trevor Knight, notwithstanding his zoned performance vs Alabama in the Sugar Bowl was not competition like Mordecai and Rattler will likely be.
Mordecai and Rattler have to be the top two QBs on the all-name team, irrespective of how talented either may be...

Bingo. Exactly my point.

On the season, he had 39 passes. 28 of those came when UGA was winning by 22 or more. 24 of them came in the second half. His first half breakdown is 15 pass attempts to 17 rushes while his second half breakdown is 24 to 25.

IOW, he threw the ball 11 times and scrambled seven times to go with his 16 runs?

I know I’m showing my age, but I can recall when Coach Bryant played six quarterbacks and you really had no idea who the starter was. Yes I know those days are gone and that’s not necessarily bad but still.....

Earle, you've struck gold with a rationale for Fields to transfer to 'Bama with immediate eligibility. He comes in under the rubric of Special teams fake-punt specialist, and the NCAA rubber-stamps his appeal based on compassionate need, and which goes, "Given an obvious 'Bama weakness, and the deficiencies therein..."

Re: Justin Fields Leaving Georgia

I’ve read somewhere yesterday that Richt just had the largest mass exodus of a recruiting class in history. I think Fields would start, but why jump on a sinking ship?

I think like I do with Jalen, they are going to go to the Big XII to showcase. But I see far more upside and a ceiling for Jalen.
Fields ceiling is MUCH HIGHER than Jalen! Not even close...Fields along with the Lawrence kid and Tua have all three been called "generational QB talents". Watch this play out over the next 3 years and beyond in the NFL and you'll see.

Re: Justin Fields (potentially) Leaving Georgia

I guess you can't blame the kids for wanting to play right away. The lure of big money in the NFL has them all demanding playing time. And some of these families spend a small fortune on personal coaches and trainers for their kids, grooming them for college and then the NFL. It's a huge investment just to watch your kid get mop-up duty against Memphis.

But I kind of long for the old days when a kid came in, redshirted his first year, then played backup for two years with a shot at starting his last year or two. Now it's play-me-or-trade-me. As I said, earlier - one step closer to free-agency in college football.

Maybe, but I'll take Jalen over Fields in college.

If you needed someone to play a game today there is no question you would choose Jalen. I don't think Fields has played enough for us to really have a good idea of how good he is/could become.

Also, I kinda think daddybama is a Clemson fan or something.

I had just started to say that, AFAIC, he remains a 5* recruit, great at the HS level, with great apparent potential. That's it. TBF, he wasn't really given the opportunity to show anything more by Smart. He was given nothing like the opportunities Tua was given as a freshman. A QB can't be deemed "generational" until he shows something, as Tua did. Although not really his fault, Fields remains just a tantalizing possibility. Many great-looking HS QBs don't pan out in college. Many very good college QBs don't pan out in the NFL. Time will tell, but "generational" he's not yet...
