My thoughts on independents -
I think their ranks grew substantially after the 2016 primaries, and the majority of them had left the Dem Party. I think there has been growth since then from the Repub defections, but IMO the largest number of new independents since 2016 were either previously Dems or new voters who choose to identify that way (safe to say the majority of those who are young won’t lean to the right).
I think this growth has tilted the balance in the ranks of the independents to lean left - how far? We’ll know soon. I don’t think it’s AOC-far (though I think many moderates might tolerate Bernie more than AOC).
This is why (one reason, anyway), IMO, any Dem will get a larger portion of the independent vote than Trump. Those who left the Republican Party won’t vote for him - why would they? It means they left the party for no reason, if they did. (Hope I’m not giving even former Republicans too much credit).
Here’s a question: no matter who the Dem is running, do you really think someone like Kasich will vote for Trump? I don’t - again, I hope I’m not giving him and those like him too much credit.
Based on what I’ve seen and heard from him, I don’t think I am - I don’t agree with many of his positions, but I think he has more than a shred of dignity.

We'll see. But he has a history of making boneheaded comments like this, which seem pretty out of touch with the demographic majority of his party:

Yeah, I think Biden craps in his Cheerios before all is said and done. I grew up in the 60s and 70s and I’d take them any DOW over what kids have to deal with now.
His mouth is connected to a faulty motor. It will put him in the ditch before it’s all over.

Meh, a leader sometimes has to say unpopular things.
Eh, I don't mind that. My issue is I just think he's dead wrong, and far too confident in his ignorance. His is the generation that ignored climate change, made politics more corrupt, and crafted a world where access to the skilled job market now requires 5-6 digits of personal debt before our first paycheck. The fact that he doesn't understand (or care to understand) this makes him entirely unsuitable to represent me and millions of others who've grown up with the problems his generation either created or ignored.

I'm a pragmatist, so I would obviously vote for Biden over Trump. But if you want to suppress Democratic enthusiasm and turnout, the absolute best way is to nominate a milquetoast like Joe. A lot of "centrists" here think "moderate" candidates like Klobuchar and Biden are the only way to woo Independents and win. What they ignore is that no Democrat will be excited to vote for either of those names, and apathy on the left gives Trump the best chance to win in 2020.

I dare say ignoring the middle/center will be more detrimental. Go full-bore left and you'll be lamenting another term of pumpkin man.

I think Biden could have it a different way and acknowledged the difficulties faced today and taken the higher road by doing so without expressing that some things were worse then.

Or maybe I've just had my fill lately of whiny entitled snits that abhor work and those that don't respect others' rights to fundamental things like free speech and the like.

Biden would be better than Trump by far, but that's not a high bar.

It's a bit of a pickle, although I think our definitions of "full bore left" probably differ. The candidates who excite the so-called "centrists" do not overlap those who excite the democratic base, and that's a concern that will need to be sorted out during the primary.

I'm pretty sure we agree that every generation faces certain systemic problems. And I bet Biden would probably agree too if we shared a beer and talked like normal humans. But it's really, really bad that Biden so casually dismissed the very real issues facing the biggest demographic he'll be trying to court in this election. Now, this comment was from 2018, and I certainly hope he wouldn't say something so stupid while actually running for president. But he has a history of putting his foot in his mouth and then playing it off with the fun quirky uncle routine, so I expect we'll see more of this. IMO, that just isn't going to cut it.

Biden getting the millennials angry is a win-win situation. Millennials don’t vote, and old people like to reminisce about their generation being better than those that follow.

It will not be Bernie - it’s not going to happen, as much as I wish it would. DNC is still corrupt. As a matter of fact, I firmly believe it will be a brokered convention. I’m not convinced Dem primary voters will give any candidate the delegates they need to win outright (even if the DNC starts playing Geppetto) - too many similarities between all the candidates.
IDK I wouldn’t count Bernie out just yet. It does scare me how corrupt the DNC is especially when you combine that with Warren’s history of telling lies.

Most GOpers think I'm a socialist. Most leftist think I'm a fascist. So I'm probably a somewhere in the center as a classical liberal.

Wrong again Earle!! Irrefutable proof that sweet potatoes and yams are the same thing.

I think the point the author was trying to make is that our cornucopia of foods is dependent upon high energy consumption and that if The Green New Deal is adopted, our standard of living would go down. A conclusion I don't agree with.
"
Today the U.S. Department of Agriculture requires labels with the term ‘yam’ to be accompanied by the term ‘sweet potato.’ Unless you specifically search for yams, which are usually found in an international market, you are probably eating sweet potatoes!" https://www.loc.gov/rr/scitech/mysteries/sweetpotato.html

Newsflash: GOP’ers think everyone who disagrees with them is a socialist.
They cling to that like Trump holding the flag at CPAC.
