5 Weird Items In The New Emerson Poll

No. 5: 43% of Pete Buttigieg’s support comes from Independent voters, not registered Democrats.

No. 4: Only 42% of those who voted for Bernie in the 2016 Primary selected him as their top choice in the 2020 Primary.

No. 3: 26% of current Bernie Sanders supporters said that they would rather vote for President Donald Trump over Senator Elizabeth Warren, if that were the eventual 2020 matchup.

No. 2: While 100% of Buttigieg’s supporters said they would support Bernie against Trump (if that were the General Election matchup), only 79% of Bernie’s supporters said they would vote for Buttigieg over Trump in a General Election.

No. 1: Only 51% of current Bernie supporters actually voted in the 2016 General Election for the Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton – 7% voted for Trump, 23% voted for a third-party candidate, and 19% did not vote.

Honestly, if Bernie doesn't get the nom and Trump winning in 2020 would kill this crap centrist old guard democratic party then I'd have to consider it for a second.

Honestly if Sanders loses the nomination again and the cult of Bernie either stays home or votes for Trump, screw 'em.

Gotta go left my friend. They gonna learn the lesson one way or another. These people aren't entitled to vote for a party that offers nothing for them.

I hear you. I just don't think the country or world gets a do-over after 2020.

If Bernie supporters care about, say, climate change as much as they claim to, then it's nonsensical to vote for a party that denies it over one that proposes immediate action. If Bernie supporters care about universal health care as much as they claim to, it's absurd to help the party that's actively trying to take healthcare away from millions at the expense of the one committed to universal coverage.

It's easy to claim that the mean "centrist" Dems have done nothing for those to further to the left. But when those same centrists align with nearly all your goals and you still support the other side out of pure spite, the problem isn't their "centrism;" it's your (plural) extremism. I'm watching Bernie supporters look and talk more and more like Trump supporters, and it's sad.

They might just sound the same because they have fire in their belly for the causes they believe regardless if they're founded or unfounded. That is the problem centrism has when the country is appreciably not getting better for half or more of the population. The democrats are the ones that need to choose sides in my opinion. Either keep on heading down the path of just being the smooth-talking fasc-enablers or adopt a more democratic socialist agenda. There is no splitting the middle in this fight which is what has been paralyzing the main body of the DNP.

Where we might disagree is that I think several of the more serious candidates are adopting a somewhat democratic socialist agenda. IMO Bernie, Warren, and Buttigieg fall into that camp (in descending order perhaps), which is three of the top 5 in most polls.

Another point -- the big one -- where we differ is your conviction that we'll get another chance to solve the problems that are important to these more left-leaning candidates if Trump wins 4 more years. I don't think we do.

I agree with you on that fact that the most viable candidates are known or seeming progressive candidates. I'm worried of somebody like Biden swooping in and hoodwinking enough people into another big promise-little delivery centrist presidency. That will just assure in the near future that we get somebody like Trump, a naked fascist, but with the ability to effectively frame his opinions so people fall in line (or that the opposition just gives up after another failed democratic presidency).

I still have my fingers crossed that Biden decides to save his legacy and just doesn't announce.

Felt this was more appropriate here than on the other board.

"To the people of France I would like to say that Notre-Dame Cathedral was like a gift to the human race. We share the pain but we also thank you for this gift to civilization."

Amazing to consider having a president who cares enough to speak multiple languages. Common in other countries, but so rare here...

I remember other heads of state offering condolences and support after 9/11. It was always delivered in English.

To be fair, English is the international language, but I get your meaning.

I can't recall the last time we had a president who could communicate fluently in other languages.

I really don't know much about PB's politics, though I assume I'll likely not agree with much of them. That said, I'm fairly desperate for someone intelligent in the WH, even if i don't agree with them on some issues.

Finally got a chance to watch Bernie's Fox town hall.

Frankly, it was really awkward especially in the beginning. The Fox commentators asked some IMO unfair questions. Bernie certainly could have handled them better though. I think his personality turns some people off. It definitely isn't my favorite even though I tend to look past it because I agree with a lot of his policy ideas and appreciate his fighter mentality.

Overall I don't think its a town hall that is going to change anyones mind. People who like Bernie will still like him and people who can't stand him probably feel like they were right about him. It didn't move the needle in either direction for me except to maybe confirm that he is one of the 3-4 candidates I would be happy to support in a general election.

I do think Bernie vs Trump debates would be awful to listen to.

Ill never be able to look at Bernie seriously and not be able to see Larry David...

Biden set to announce presidential run next week

April 19, 2019, 10:06 AM EDT / Updated April 19, 2019, 10:27 AM EDT
By Mike Memoli
WASHINGTON — Advisers to former Vice President Joe Biden are finalizing plans for the launch of his presidential campaign next week, ending months of suspense that has hung over the Democratic nominating race.
Discussions among his core group of advisers about the exact timing of his announcement and subsequent campaign events are ongoing and subject to change, multiple officials said. Those discussions were set into motion earlier this month, as Biden himself publicly acknowledged a decision was all but a formality.
"My intention from the beginning was if I were to run would be the last person to announce," he said after delivering the second of three speeches since mid-March to union audiences. “We’ll find out whether I can win in a primary."
