Duke’s performance as a player and influential role in the community led to his 2019 selection

4/18/2019

BIRMINGHAM, AL –
The Southeastern Conference will be honoring former Alabama catcher Dr. Doug Duke as a member of the 2019 class of SEC Baseball Legends Presented by AT&T at the 2019 SEC Tournament in Hoover, Ala., from May 21-26.

Duke was a standout catcher for the Crimson Tide from 1984-86, twice being named to the All-SEC list. A two-time All-American at UA, Duke earned second-team recognition as a sophomore before a first-team selection in his junior campaign of 1986. He owns the Alabama record for career slugging percentage (.758) and holds the single-season records by a catcher for average (.388 - 1985) and home runs (27 - 1986). He went on to play professionally after being drafted by the Montreal Expos in the seventh round of the 1986 amateur draft.

Following the completion of his pro career, Duke returned to college to pursue a medical degree at the Kansas City University College of Medicine and Biosciences, where he graduated with honors in 2004. He is currently practicing in Dothan, Ala., as a general surgeon and wound care specialist while also serving as the Flowers Hospital Wound Care Center's medical director.

Duke is joined in the 2019 Legends class by Johnny Ray of Arkansas, Josh Fogg of Florida and Jeremy Sowers of Vanderbilt. Each legend will be recognized individually throughout the two quarterfinal matchups on Friday and will have on-field recognition and an awards presentation by SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey on Saturday, May 25, during the semifinals of the Tournament.

Alabama has had two Legends honored previously, with Andy Phillips being recognized in 2015 and Dr. Jeff Laubenthal being selected to the inaugural class in 2012.
