“That offense at Auburn, I’m not sure what the hell it is,” Lombardi said. “They run power, they run unbalanced… But anyway, that offense, seriously, might be one of the worst offenses in football, so you can’t evaluate a quarterback in it or they can’t train a quarterback, that’s the other thing. (Gus Malzahn) can’t train them.”

The cat is finally of the bag!! LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not taking up for the guy but let's be real. Gus can only do what he knows and at his core, Gus is a HS football coach with a very creative mind from an offensive standpoint. That creativity has gotten him paid handsomely. But, what he knows doesn't prepare quarterbacks for the NFL and in today's college football, that's a big deal. Having a guy of Lombardi's clout, publicly say something like this about your program doesn't go unnoticed. And you know this doesn't sit well with the powers at be on the plains. This is bad publicity and possibly will impact recruiting.

Wait, so Gus isn't an "offensive genius" like we've been force-fed to believe??? ;)
Taking out the criteria of "Prepare a qb for the pro level", Gus isn't the worst offensive person to have on your college staff. His outside the box, sometimes mind numbing, thinking has burnt us on more than one occasion. So much so that we incorporate some facets of his offense in what we do. I think his offensive philosophy is ideal for an athletic quarterback who's more athlete/passer than pro style pocket passer. Hence, Gus never really figuring out what to do with Stidhman. Gus and his offense works more comfortably with a Nick Marshall and lord knows what he could have done with a Jalen Hurts. But Lombardi is right, his offensive style and philosophy is a "square peg into round hole" regarding translating to the NFL.

Looking live at every P5 football program reading the comments and realizing they are battling Auburn for a QB...

Gus Malzahn draws up plays in study hall that no self-respecting coach would use in a backyard Sunday afternoon flag football game.......and then runs them in SEC "must win" games with mixed results.

I realize he hit that play for a TD on us - but a reminder that Saban said very clearly we knew what play was coming but the players didn't do what they knew to do (a point he's been making since spring ball began and esp last week).

However.....it's not "really" Malzahn's job to prepare these guys for the NFL. When the NFL wants to pay college football players as a farm system, they have the right to complain. Until then, they can all shut up.

Malzahn's job is to win games at Auburn. If he happens to prep guys for the NFL, that's a happy side effect for someone else.

To be fair, Marshall wasn't really a great passer. He had some VERY athletic receivers to throw to...and they made him look great.

Cam basically played backyard football based on his athleticism. Gus merely benefited from that.

Anyone here name one QB that he recruited from high school and developed into an NFL QB... :cool2:

Lombardi makes a very valid point indeed...

The only talent that Gus gets at QB has always been a proven transfer into the program. Nix is a legacy, so whatever he does doesn't count. He would have gone to au if PeeWee Herman were the coach and gotten equal NFL development...:cool2:

Auburn fans and Alabama fans have different priorities.

Auburn's year is made if they beat Alabama. Period. Gus got an extension because he has found intermittent success with this. NFL preparation and college championships are of less importance.

Alabama fans take pride in Coach Saban's NFL style of preparation and gameplay, which often lead to championships. The Auburn game is simply a hurdle to get to our real goal.

Auburn's offense is a bunch of dumb crap and gadgets built for one purpose: to try to fluster Alabama's defense because of its pure stupidity leading to busts.

Auburn can't quite match Alabama for whole team-on-team athleticism. But they do have some exceptional athletes, like that soph receiver who is supposed to be the fastest player in football.

Malzahn sets up misdirection to very slightly slow down defenses. He keeps his play design ultra-simple so that players can make the read as fast as possible. This explains his 3-way option play, with 2 crossers intersecting with an upfield RB with the QB reading a jet sweep toss, the inside run or the QB keeper. This was basically Malzahn's only play for Nick Marshall.

This stunt/one-trick-pony in no way prepares QBs for the pros.

GM is a very good recruiter -- and offensive coach when you allow his OL to block 5 yards downfield -- as has been proven ad nauseum. Given AU's "resources" he will always have good athletes -- even Tater Tot and Doug Barfield could do that. However, putting out a product that competes year in and out for the SEC...that plays on a championship level every single year??? Not on your life...the next QB he teaches how to read a defensive backfield will be the first.

Gus does win games at Auburn, but guys looking to make it in the Pros should look elsewhere. Gus's offense would have worked well with Jalen Hurts. It worked with Scam Newton.
