I think I drove with my driver's ed instructor exactly once. It got me an insurance discount for a while.

You still had to take the State Test either way...at least in 1975 anyways.

All you need is 30 hrs of driving with a parent, but itís way more beneficial to take Drivers Ed because you donít have to take the States driving test

Wow! That is almost as stupid as not being required to recertify periodically. I know many elderly people who refuse to stop driving in spite of their clear danger to themselves and their families.

THAT is why Alabama has the worst drivers in the country!!!

So an idiot can certify a 16 year old to get a license...without a State Test?!?

What kind of idiots passed that legislation?!? SMH

I don't drive there and can't imagine worse than we have here. The insurance rates in the state ( compared to elsewhere) will attest to that...

I went through over a decade and some change ago. The drivers ed route took the place of the State Drivers test. If you didnít take drivers ed then you had to take the test with the county.

You would have to ask a lawyer or some Alabama government official about the non traditional route, but from what Iíve understood only a parent or legal guardian can sign off on the 30 hrs.

A 5 to 10 minute drive with a trooper, while on one's best behavior, does not make one an excellent driver, either.

come spend a couple of months commuting in atlanta if you think you've seen bad driving.

Yeah I know it too well. But by state I donít find Georgia drivers as bad as a whole. But itís a matter of personal opinion of what makes one driver more unsafer than another. I think the most scared Iíve been driving is going through Tennessee in those mountain highways with small lanes while folks are flying and weaving in and out of traffic.

Sixteen year olds have absolutely no experience. Is Driver's Ed (in Alabama) even mandatory anymore...?
As I posted way above, the kid who rear-ended me was both talking to his parents on his cell and gawking off to the side at my wife's car...

The worst driving is concentrated in the city Atlanta and the sprawl around it. The state as a whole is not bad. I think Atlanta's bad driving is because of all the transplants from other states. It is like somebody decided to send the worst drivers from every state here.
