A Canadian colleague told me the Kangaroo unit was one of the most-decorated units in the Canadian army. Wherever the crap was hitting the fan, the Canadians sent the Kangaroos. The Kangaroos (basically Sherman tanks with the turret removed) and the drivers were the Kangaroo unit. The infantrymen riding in them were a separate (supported) unit.
I guess the Kangaroos kept a lot of Canadian lads alive.

I passed, but I wish I hadn't now. BTW, wonder why the Limeys are ragging on the Scots?
I read one Scottish wag describer Sir Douglas Haig (WW I British general) as "the greatest of all Scottish soldiers, because he killed the most Englishmen."
That viewed alongside Stirling Bridge, Bannockburn, the "Rough Wooing," Mary Queen of Scots, Culloden, etc. and the Scots have a complicated relationship with the English.

it's a bucket list item for me.

Not that you should otherwise, but don't count on any selfies from me if I make it.
You would not believe it (I would not had I not seen it myself), but there are signs outside the visitors' entrance saying, "No swimsuits, no guitar playing, no singing." Obviously, each of these norms has been violated in the past at some point.
Some people have no sense of propriety.
Auschwitz is not a place of jocularity, levity or immodesty.
It is an intense site for sorrow, contemplation, and memory.

Take a picture of the entrance and then store my electronic devices and pay my respects to the thousands senselessly slaughtered there: that would be my mantra.

Yah, I've heard. I've even seen some smiling selfies people have posted. A stunning lack of self-awareness...

October 29, 1944: In the Battle for the Scheldt, the Canadian 1st Army continues reducing Breskens pocket, captures Goes (on the Beveland peninsula), and the Polish 1st Armored Division captures Breda, while elements of the British 2nd Army, under heavy German counterattack around Liesel and Asten, dig in and fight fiercely. US 7th Army takes Bru and Jeanmenil and pushes toward Raon-l'Etape while RAF 2nd Tactical Air Force supports ground operations and flying sweeps and US 9th Air Force aircraft support ground forces, fly sweeps and patrols, and attack multiple rail bridges.

In the Netherlands RAF Bomber Command sends 358 aircraft to attack German positions on Walcheren Island during the day. In Germany, US 15th Air Force attacks Munich with only 35 bombers after almost 700 abort due to poor weather. US 15th Air Force attacks rail targets with 30 fighters and RAF Bomber Command sends 59 aircraft to attack Cologne - British bombers dropped about 4,000 high explosive bombs and 200,000 incendiary bombs overnight. British Lancaster bombers from Scotland attack the German battleship Tirpitz, doing little damage.

On the eastern front, the Soviets begin the Budapest offensive. The 46th Army of Soviet 2nd Ukrainian Front attacks the Hungarian 3rd Army around Kecskemet. The 7th Guards Army of Soviet 2nd Ukrainian Front attacks the German 6th Army across the Tisza River and the German 8th Army attempts to fight its way out of the Nyireghaza salient.

In Italy, British 8th Army attacks around Meldola, and the US 5th Army captures Palazzo. Meanwhile, US 12th Air Force attacks road and rail targets in the Po valley with 15 sorties.

October 30, 1944: In the Netherlands, RAF Bomber Command sends 110 aircraft to attack German gun and troop positions on Walcheren Island during the day (14 air raids were made in total (over 2,000 sorties) dropping over 9,000 tons of bombs). Elements of Canadian 1st Army fight across south Beveland and reach the Walcheren Channel while forces from British 2nd Army engage in attacks and counterattacks. Allied troops capture Roosendaal, Tholen, and Goes in the Netherlands. Further south, US 3rd Army completes the capture of Maizieres-les-Metz and US 7th Army captures St Benoit.

US 8th Air Force attacks Hamburg with 139 bombers and targets of opportunity with approximately 650 bombers, while more than 500 others abort due to poor weather conditions. US 8th Air Force attacks naval base on Heligoland Island with 26 bombers and two remote-controlled B-17 bombers. RAF Bomber Command sends 102 aircraft to attack Wesseling during the day, 905 aircraft to attack Cologne overnight, and 62 aircraft to attack Berlin overnight.

Hitler continues to pore over plans for Nazi Germany's Ardennes campaign with staff members Reich Marshal Hermann Goring, Head of Security Police in France Helmut Knochen, Chief of the Army General Staff Heinz Guderian and a few other unnamed officials.. Hitler's hope for the Ardennes attack (code-named Wacht am Rhein (Watch on the Rhine)), is to seize the Belgian port of Antwerp, denying this vital port to the Allies, thus demoralizing both Britain and the U.S. into making peace separately from the Soviet Union. In an ideal outcome, Hitler would then be free to shift forces to slow or halt the advance of the Soviet forces to the east.

On the eastern front, the Soviet 2nd Ukrainian Front continues its offensive in Hungary.

The Auschwitz gas chambers are used for the last time, as one final transport of Jews - 1,700 men, women, and children from the work camp at Theresienstadt - are murdered.

British 8th Army reaches Forlì, Italy, while in liberated Italy, the Greek government in exile bans the ELAS National Militia -- the Communist resistance movement, from their home base in Caserta, Meanwhile, US 12th Air Force attacks road and rail targets in the Po valley with 51 sorties in ongoing poor weather conditions.

At the museum at Groesbeek, Netherlands, dedicated to memorializing the airborne drops of September 1944, there is one display that says, "Mary has a Canadian." It addresses the number of Dutch girls impregnated by the Canadian troops in 1944-5. Apparently, there were quite a few. This caused some concern among the Dutch civilians (especially, presumably, the fathers of the young ladies). When complaints made their way to Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, she asked for a meeting with Canadian General Harry Crerar of the Canadian 1st Army. The queen ask Crerar to remove the Canadian soldiers from Dutch soil. Crerar allegedly responded, "You want me to dig up the dead ones, too?" The queen burst into tears and that ended the conversation.
Apocryphal. If it ain't true (as Judge Roy Bean might say), it oughta be.

Same at American Cemetary at Omaha Beach. Probably happens daily. It’s not a “look at me” kind of place. But, those buried there died for the freedom of fools, too.

Thankfully, when I was there in 2013 for the D-Day memorial there was a more somber attitude amongst attendees.

October 31, 1944: It’s Tuesday - today marks 21 weeks (147 days) since the D-Day Invasion and the beginning of the Battle of Normandy. Canadian 1st Army continues reducing Breskens pocket and begins amphibious crossings and attacks on Walcheren Island, while Allied forces take the peninsula of South Beveland, Belgium. British 2nd Army attacks around Raamsdonk and Liesel, while the US 7th Army captures Montigny, Merviller, part of Baccarat, Menarmont, and Nossoncourt. The 9th Brigade of the Canadian 3rd Division enters Knock-sur-Mer. US 9th Air Force operations are limited due to poor weather conditions. Overnight, Kriegsmarine (German Navy) small craft unsuccessfully attack Allied minesweepers in the Scheldt estuary.

Over Germany, RAF Bomber Command sends 101 aircraft to conduct a daylight bombing raid in the Ruhr industrial area, with the Bottrop oil plant as the primary target. RAF Bomber Command also sends 493 aircraft to attack Cologne overnight and 49 aircraft to attack Hamburg overnight.

In occupied Denmark, Gestapo Headquarters (the Shell House in Aarhus) is destroyed by a precision bombing raid by the RAF. The objective of the attack is to destroy as many records as possible in order to aid resistance members.

On the eastern front, the 46th Army of Soviet 2nd Ukrainian Front continues attacking around Kecskemet.

14,000 Jews were transported from Slovakia to Auschwitz Concentration Camp in occupied Poland.

In Italy, British 8th Army pushes more units across the Ronco River and continues advancing while US 12th Air Force aircraft provide support to ground forces and attack bridges, transportation lines, and other targets in the Po valley.

Bernard Montgomery is awarded the Virtuti Militari V Class of Poland.

Most of those are M3 Stuarts. I count 8 Stuarts and 4 Shermans (bottom left, far right, top left, and in the middle of the formation).

November 1, 1944: Operation Infatuate (an effort to open the port of Antwerp to shipping and relieve logistical constraints) begins: a brigade of the British 52nd Division and the 41st, 47th and 48th Commando Brigades land on the Walcheren. The landings receive naval support from the HMS Warspite, 2 monitors as well as other vessels. The German garrison on the island consists of the 70th Division (General Daser). Many landing craft are lost on the approach but British forces penetrate Flushing and approach Westkapelle during the first day of fighting.

British 2nd Army finishes clearing sector south of the Maas, while US 3rd Army regroups and prepares for new attacks. US 7th Army captures Baccarat, Bertrichamps, and La Bourgonce and US 9th Air Force fighters conduct limited operations in poor weather conditions. RAF Bomber Command sends 25 aircraft on special operations with supplies and agents for Resistance forces overnight.

Over Germany, US 8th Air Force attacks Gelsenkirchcen with 256 bombers, Hamm, Koblenz, and other targets with 60 bombers and US 15th Air Force attacks Vienna, Graz, Gussing, Kapfenburg, and other targets. RAF Bomber Command sends 242 aircraft to attack Homberg during the day (escorted by 145 fighters), 288 aircraft to attack Oberhausen overnight, 49 aircraft to attack Berlin overnight, and 20 aircraft to attack Cologne, Karlsruhe, and Mulheim overnight.

On the eastern front, the 7th Guards Army of Soviet 2nd Ukrainian Front attacks toward Vac and the 46th Army of Soviet 2nd Ukrainian Front captures Kecskemet.

In Italy, the British 5th Corps (part of British 8th Army) records a limited advance near Forli, while in liberated Greece, food distribution begins around Athens. Famine relief measures are necessary because food imports have been severely reduced by the recent fighting and significant damage has been done to the indigenous agriculture.

I'll bet that was not a pleasant day at the office. Imagine the water temperatures, the mud, and a division of Germans trying to kill you.
It's chilly here this AM, so this exact thought crossed my mind. Unfortunately, fighting a war doesn't always coincide with great weather.

November 2, 1944: On the western front, the Canadian 1st Army continues the battle of the Scheldt. Intense fighting is recorded on the island of Walcheren. Canadian 2nd Division withdraws from its Walcheren, the Netherlands bridgehead. Nearby, Allied troops capture Wissenkerke and Zoutelande. Elements of the British 52nd Division capture Flushing. To the rear, on the English Channel coast, Zeebrugge and Heyst are cleared (these are the last pockets of German occupation in Belgium). Meanwhile, British 7th Armored Division (an element of British 2nd Army) begins new attacks and achieves a limited advance. Forces of US 3rd Army launch a new attack as well.

In accordance with Dwight Eisenhower's plan, Bernard Montgomery orderes a complete redeployment of his Army Group in Europe. First Canadian Army now assumes responsibility for the front from the sea to the Reichsward near Kleve in Germany, while Second British Army is ordered to clear the Germans west of the Maas River from the huge pocket between Venray and Roermond in the Netherlands, and then to take over the American front north of Geilenkirchen in Germany known as the Heinberg Salientl.

Near the German-Belgian border, the Battle of Hurtgen Forest begins in earnest. The US 28th Infantry Division’s attack begins, but the defenders are expecting it and are prepared. The U.S. 109th Infantry Regiment is slowed after only 300 yd (270 m) by an unexpected minefield, is pinned down by mortar and artillery fire and harassed by local counterattacks (only one mile is gained over the next two days, after which the 109th dug in and endured casualties). The U.S. 112th Infantry Regiment attacks Vossenack and the neighboring ridge, which are captured later in the day. The 112th is then stopped on the Kall by strong defenses and difficult terrain. The U.S. 110th Infantry Regiment works to clear the woods next to the River Kall, capture Simonskall, and maintain a supply route for the advance on Schmidt - very difficult tasks due to weather, prepared defenses, determined defenders, and terrain.

RAF Bomber Command sends 184 aircraft to attack Homberg during the day while US 8th Air Force attacks Merseburg with 593 bombers, Sterkrade with 107 bombers, Bielefeld with 172 bombers, Castrop with 131 bombers, and targets of opportunity with 102 bombers. RAF Bomber Command sends 992 aircraft to attack Dusseldorf overnight and 42 aircraft to attack Osnabruk overnight.

In unusually heavy air-to-air action, 400 Luftwaffe fighters intercept US 8th Air Force missions, downing 40 bombers and 16 escorts which in turn claim 136 interceptors. The Luftwaffe also loses 133 fighters in daylight operations in defense of the Reich and occupied territory against Allied strategic bombing. When presented with these numbers, Hitler declares it would be insanity to continue producing fighter aircraft under such circumstances.

All eligible German males were ordered to enlist in the Volkssturm under penalty of military court-martial.

In Italy, elements of the US 5th Army take Casseta, south of Bologna.

On the eastern front, the 14th Army of Soviet Karelian Front captures Mustola.

Pictured: The 28th Infantry Division, known as the "Keystone Division" by its distinctive red insignia, entered the Hurtgen Forest on November 2, 1944. By the time they left the "The Green Hell" eleven days later, all officers in the 28th's rifle companies had been killed or wounded. The division suffered 6,184 combat casualties, 620 lost to battle fatigue and 738 disabled by trench foot. Nearly every soldier of the 28th who entered that forest became a battle casualty.; 28th Infantry Division soldiers headed for the disastrous battle in the Hurtgen forest.; Map of the battle in the Hurtgen Forest, November 2-9, 1944.; An M31 Tank Recovery Vehicle of Co B, 752nd Tank Bn, near Udine, Italy, November 2, 1944.
