Re: Time for a new TV...

And so it goes. This time, instead of a DVR box, a tiny wireless box arrived. I took them up on their free tech installation...Name: 20190712_144928[1].jpg

For my watching habits, it doesn't seem to save anything and still doesn't cover everything I watch. It is somewhat better than the last time I checked it out...

There are so many streaming services and all of them have stuff the others don't. It takes some research.

Re: Time for a new TV...

Before I negotiated our DirecTV bill into a lower-than-streaming cost, we piloted Youtube.TV, Hulu, Sling, Directv Now, Philo, and PlaystationVue over the course of several weeks. We had made the decision to go with Youtube.TV because there seemed to be a much better picture and little lag or buffering.

As a reminder, you can go to https://www.suppose.tv/ to identify the channels you want to have and it will give you the best package(s) to get those channels.

Earle, since this has obviously become "rocket science" for your provider, maybe one of the local Nasa folks can help you out

I wish! Last night, since I'm stuck with it at least until Monday, I tried to install the little wireless box. I tried three times to get hooked to the LAN automatically and I tried manually, which is a tedious task. I kept getting the error message "Sorry, this is not working. Call us at 1-800-xxx-xxxx and we'll get this cleared up promptly." Of course, I think talking to one more unknowledgeable Comcast rep would make me throw up. I guess it's a choice of staying with Comcast, or AT&T or Google, both fiber, for me. Not only do none of the company's programming quite fit me, the delay in sports would make game thread moderating impossible...

Re: Time for a new TV...

If google fiber were available (as we were promised in our area it would be ... 3 years ago) I would have gone with them in a heartbeat. I saw it in their retail space in downtown ATL and it was awesome plus our speed was about 25mbps back then. Now with AT&T Fiber it's 1gb. AT&T Fiber has not once given me a single issue (other than a modem went out about 1 year in) in that time so I'm very happy with them.

You should try the 5-day free trial with Youtube.TV and see the delay & how that works in your location / ISP (if you haven't already).

For others, Clark Howard has a good, recent, comparison of the providers and Wirecutter.com has a good "cutting the cord" series of reviews.

Thanks, Brett. I've looked at couple of other comparison sites and no single streaming service really gives me what I usually watch, so the delay is not an issue. I'm just not a candidate. At this point, provided Comcast comes through and delivers on getting 4K service up and running, I'll stay with them while waiting for Google. Google is about a mile away, but, as I said above, the problem is that's where they've been for a year. Huntsville Utilities, again, owns the fiber and Google rents it. Google's channel lineup has what I watch. They haven't had all the layoffs that AT&T went through and their CS record is good. I'll post Monday after the tech leaves, now that I've added this many chapters to the account...

Well, I said I'd update. The tech came, was affable, had a box which would work and took the five boxes with him, complaining mildly about room in his truck. (Comcast sent him in a pickup instead of a van.) So far, so good. Then, I got my new monthly bill from Comcast. Despite multiple promises, I'd been billed for the visit and a phantom "new TV" had been added to my bill, increasing it by around $85. They never quit Comcasting...

Pretty much. I contacted CS/billing this AM, resigned to at least 30 minutes on the phone and that's what it took. She was very sweet and flirty and explained to me over and over how complex it was to take the $70 off, even after she admitted that my account had been notated so that it should never have been placed on. AFA the extra TV's concerned, that was because it would be credited next month when the old box came off my account. I asked why they didn't go for the entire $112.50 for all five boxes, while they were at it. Well, they only do it for one. Of course, the $70 will still be on the bill until I raise hell for months. My mood after they got through with me:
