It ended up being a test of the escape rockets in case something bad happens during launch. The wired thing was the started with the mid-stage rocket (the one that is supposed to take over once the initial boosters run out of fuel), but this mid-stage rcket started on the ground. Odd.
Anyway, the test was a success.
