I missed this anniversary on Friday, but it is worth commemorating.
30 years later, the human chain that 'unshackled' the Baltic nations still matters

On 23 August 1989, people in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania formed a human chain across all three countries to protest their occupation by the USSR.
The Soviets publicly acknowledged the secret protocols of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact (which secretly assigned Estonia and Latvia to the Soviet sphere and which gave the opportunity for Stalin to occupy all three in June 1940).

By some estimates, as many as 1/3 of all the people in those three countries participated in the protest.

The Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians did not kill anybody, did not burn any cars. They just let the Soviets know that they were not going to accept the fiction that the illegal occupation of their countries was in any way popular.
I thought it was a pretty cool moment.
