Some funny stuff comes up on "Nextdoor".

Here's an example from today:

Movie Theatre:
We just went to go to the movies ( nsb) and it’s closed. Frustrating that online it doesn’t say anything. Lots of people doing the same thing as us. Hoping I saved some of you from wasting your time.

1st reply:
Was just thinking about going this afternoon. Thanks for the tip.

2nd reply:
Their phone works.

Mandatory evacuation update from the PIO of the NSB Police Dept.:

Volusia County officials have clarified the mandatory evacuation order.

The order, which was effective at 10 a.m. today, applies to:
· Residents who live on the beachside
· Residents who live in low-lying areas, RVs and mobile homes east of I-95.

Persons who live in areas not included in the mandatory evacuation order should pay close attention to the weather forecasts and evacuate voluntarily if needed.

The emergency curfew for cities and unincorporated areas east of the Halifax River has been extended. The new hours are from 6 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday, and from 6 p.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday. The restriction does not apply to authorized public safety personnel.
========

What they don't tell you is evacuation is NOT mandatory.

I'll never understand why they call it "mandatory" - if it isn't mandatory.

I guess to make it sound more intimidating. But everybody knows it's a "mandatory suggestion" so, I don't think it's working!

These two are real rocket scientists.........

Stealing sand bags: Men accused of looting during an emergency

Governments and agencies across Florida have been giving away sand bags to their residents in anticipation of flooding because of Hurricane Dorian, but two men near Daytona Beach are accused of looting a construction site to obtain them.

The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy spotted the men about 5 p.m. Monday along a road that’s off Interstate 95 and I-4. One man was loading the bags into a pickup as the other man acted as a lookout, the sheriff’s office said.

Thaylon A. Lewis, 43, and Joseph Colombo Jr., 45, “are the first to be arrested for looting during a state of emergency,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook posting.

It's a liability thing. If it's mandatory, they're telling you that they probably won't be able to come get you in an emergency and, if they don't, then there's no liability. It's sort of like driving around a "road closed" sign...

Went to bed around midnight and slept like a baby. Very windy out and rainy too but power and Internet still working.

The eye is directly across from us right now! So surreal to have a beast like that so close.

Hope everyone else is doing OK.

Question...that's a LOT of debris/garbage, and they're on a barrier island. What will they do with all that?? I remember working in south alabama after katrina and ivan and opal and others that i can't remember the name and there'd be huge dump fields that that was taken to. Timber was piled and burned. I remember one being near the prison at atmore. I'm sure there are still huge debris piles from michael last year. All of the "land" there is used for houses. There is no place to make a "dump". So, what will they do with it all? Barge it into the ocean and dump?

Same here. Dorian stayed too far off shore to knock out power. Plenty of rain and wind ongoing, but (knock on wood) not enough to cause any disruption. Lily has no school at least through tomorrow. I'm waiting to hear if I report to work tomorrow. Hopefully no damage to the office.

Looks like Dorian punched itself out over the Bahamas. And Jesus what a mess has been left! :(

Just returned from a short walk to the beach. Still windy and some very light rain - not bad. Wind has shifted around to the west. Lot of plant litter all over the place but no major damage that I saw anywhere.

Like Bodhi said - the Bahamas took a lot out of Dorian and saved us from what could have been a very bad situation.

These are not huge waves.....unless being described by the media, of course.

Back in the office today after we were given the all clear yesterday. Didn't even lose power at the house. So lucky.

I do like the recent work schedule. Off Saturday - Thursday. Work today. Off Saturday - Monday. Thanks, Dorian!

Barehand 220v included, possibly. I'm sure he will check in at some point. Stay safe, Barehand and thanks for all you do!
Thanks man! Just got back last night from North Carolina. I wasn't a part of the Florida call out as I was in the Midwest working a storm as well, basically left there and went straight to NC!

Ah man...thanks for checking in - and for everything you and your team does. Sorry I got your handle wrong - shorted you 10 volts! No pun intended. :)

Fingers crossed we get through the rest of the season without anything as bad as Dorian.

I guess you won't be sent to the Bahamas?
